The Cincinnati Reds activated first baseman Joey Votto from the disabled list on Tuesday, but he was not in the starting lineup against the Phillies on Tuesday.

Reds manager Dusty Baker told reporters Votto could pinch-hit on Tuesday and that Votto is likely to be in the lineup on Wednesday.

"The plan could change every day depending on how he feels and how his body feels," Baker said, according to MLB.com. "As of right now, he will probably start [Wednesday]. Then we have to watch him if there's a long inning one way or the other, if he gets sore, if he makes a wrong move -- we're going to try to preserve him and work him back in there.

"A lot of it will depend on Joey feels and how honest he is going to be with us, which I know he will be."

Votto has not played for the Reds since July 15. On July 17, he had arthroscopic surgery to repair torn meniscus cartilage in his left knee. He had a second operation on that knee on Aug. 10.

Votto said he was healthy enough to play.

"I don't think I will see 100 percent until sometime during the offseason," Votto said, according to MLB.com. "I'm talking about being able to play baseball, being able to put myself in uncomfortable positions and I would like to think I would get through all the games and continue to recover as I play and move through September, and hopefully all the way to the end of October."

Votto played five games in his minor-league rehab assignment, going a 2-for-11 for two teams. He said he didn't get on base enough to fully test his knee.

The Reds went 32-16 in Votto's absence.

Votto is batting .342 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs. His .465 on-base percentage led the league at the time of his injury.
