Free agent Roy Oswalt is working out at Mississippi State
and is waiting for the right offer to pitch for a contender, agent Bob Garber
told MLB Trade Rumors.
Garber says that geography wonât be a factor for Oswalt like
it was last year. He was aiming to pitch close to his Mississippi home,
reportedly limiting his options and willingness to sign.
Now, Oswalt is instead focused on joining a contender.
Garber says his agent is willing to pitch in late-inning relief in certain
circumstances, but heâd prefer to be a starter.
Oswalt wound up signing with the Texas Rangers last May, but
he wasnât successful â 5.80 ERA over 59 innings â after returning to the
majors. He had proven a consistent starter prior to his uninspiring 2012
campaign, posting an ERA of 3.13 as a regular with the Houston Astros and
Philadelphia Phillies from 2010-11.
Despite his track record, it remains to be seen if a team â
especially a contender â has interest in adding Oswalt as a starting pitcher.
