Scott Van Slyke, son of former National League All Star outfielder Andy Van Slyke, was called up by the Los Angeles Dodgers today.  Van Slyke replaces Juan Rivera on the active roster after Rivera was injured sliding into third base in a loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Andy Van Slyke got his big league career started as a key member of Whiteyball - the 1980's St. Louis Cardinals teams that emphasized speed, pitching and defense under colorful manager Whitey Herzog.  Van Slyke then moved on to the Pittsburgh Pirates where he enjoyed the best years of his twelve year MLB career.

Andy "Slick" Van Slyke Andy was also quite the quote machine:

from Baseball-Reference:
Known for being loquacious and a good quote, Van Slyke was popular with the media.
"On the road when you do downstairs for coffee in your underwear, they throw you out of the kitchen." - Andy Van Slyke, on how life is different when you play on the road
"The biggest adjustment from the minors was learning to spend $45 in meal money." - Andy Van Slyke
"I played third base like Brooks - Mel Brooks." - Andy Van Slyke
While Scott's major league debut will be a prideful moment for the Van Slyke family, undoubtedly, Scott's biggest play occurred when he was just 7 years old.

from the NY Times (Mar 4, 1992):

The 7-year-old son of ANDY VAN SLYKE, SCOTT, saved his 3-year-old brother from drowning in a hot tub at the condominium complex at Bradenton, where their family is staying during spring training. Van Slyke and his wife, LAURI, said Scott saw something in the bottom of the hot tub Friday. Thinking it was a toy, he reached for it. When the object turned out to be soft, he realized the truth. It was his unconscious brother JARED, 3. "It was amazing. Jared weighs 33 pounds and Scott weighs only 53, but he carried him out of the water," Lauri Van Slyke said. An uncle started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while a neighbor called for an ambulance. A. J., the Van Slykes' 8-year-old son, ran to inform his parents, who were at his maternal grandmother's place a few doors away. Jared had turned blue, but was fine after a night in the hospital.
It is against my best judgment to root for the Los Angeles Dodgers; however, I will be rooting for the son of Slick in his major league debut.
Until Next Time,
Craig Turley @That_Dude_CT
