Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ted Lilly gave a valiant effort for over three months, trying to come back from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him since May. But on Friday that quest to return ended as he was shut down for the season. Lilly will have arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Sept. 21, performed in Los Angeles by team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

The procedure is said to be relatively minor, and team trainer Sue Falsone said Lilly should be throwing by January, which would keep him on track to be ready for spring training in 2013.

"Ideally it is a simple cleanup procedure. Obviously the doc won't know what he will or will not do until he gets inside the joint, but that's the plan as of now," Falsone said. "We're not expecting any large repairs of any kind."

Lilly was 5-1 with a 3.14 ERA in eight starts, enjoying his best season with the Dodgers, but hasn't pitched since May 23. He went on the disabled list with left shoulder inflammation and had various setbacks during minor league rehab assignments, ranging from shoulder pain to neck pain to hurting his back while weight lifting.

He was scheduled to throw a simulated game Thursday but it was scratched and he met with team doctors instead, when the decision was made to end his season.

"Teddy's been trying to push through and get ready, but he starts to weigh the options of what's worth it," said manager Don Mattingly.

Lilly will make $13.5 million in 2013 in the final year of a three-year, $33 million contract.
