In one way, interleague play resumes at just the right time for the Cubs. Chicago opens a three-game weekend series Friday at Minnesota.

Manager Dale Sveum likes the idea of having an extra hitter, with the designated hitter in use for the games at American League parks. He's even more happy that left fielder Alfonso Soriano will move into the DH spot for all three games this weekend.

Soriano has been nursing a sore left knee, which has hampered him in the outfield, where it takes him several steps to stop running because he can't plant the leg properly.

"I've been playing him every day," Sveum said before Thursday's 4-3 loss in 10 innings to the Brewers. "He's that one threat in our lineup, and it's hard to give him days off at all. To his credit, he doesn't want any days off, and he doesn't take days off from work. You have to give him a lot of credit for that."

Soriano has nine home runs, with all of them having come since May 15. He has traditionally been a streaky hitter. Despite the injury, he has worked hard to improve his play in left field.

"He's not taking any days off in the outfield and working," Sveum said. "That's the most impressive thing of all."
