Even after the trading deadline passed without Michael Young in a new uniform, the Philadelphia Phillies still can deal the third baseman through a waiver transaction in August. It’s easy to publish opinions and predictions before the event; however, this piece was my writing sample on July 22 (more in welcome section), when the Phils had a shot to win the division. How close was my assessment to reality? TAL’S HANDY CAPS WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: This article represents the thinking of a baseball man in my opinion. Most fans do not consider the budget, prospects on the radar, the organization’s weaknesses, the track record, the competition and the other intangibles. This is an introduction to a baseball-angled–not a fan’s–approach to coverage. I am currently submitting writing samples to major outlets to establish greater visibility for my reviews. During this period, there will be at least one article per week–and two maximum–at this site for the time being. Phillies' Michael Young scratched with tight hamstring

Michael Young cleared waivers on Thursday, so when he was not in the lineup for the Phillies in the series finale against the Cubs, many may have thought he had been traded. But that was not the case. Michael Young is still with the Phillies, but was out of the lineup due to a tight right hamstring. As reported by Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, the Phillies did not get a great deal...

Phillies Sign 16 Year Old Luis Encarnacion

According to Baseball America, the Phillies have signed 16 year old international prospect Luis Encarnacion to a contract worth $1 million. He’s considered the #4 international prospect and a top hitter in Latin America according to the linked article. He turned 16 at midnight this morning, and shortly thereafter the Phillies jumped in with the signing. This is a done deal, unlike...

Losses Keep Piling Up For Phils

Cliff Lee gave the Phillies a quality start tonight. Why would that be enough? (Photo: AP) All the best metaphors and similes to describe a Phillies loss in which they blow an early lead have been exhausted over the course of this dreadful season. At this stage, you can only come out and say it: The Phillies were up 4-0 to start the third inning of tonight’s game. They’d end...

Philadelphia Phillies agree to two-year extension with Chase Utley

The days leading up to the trade deadline saw Chase Utley's name featured in trade rumors. But as July 31st came and went, we began to hear less about where Utley could end up, and more about the second baseman working towards an extension with the Philadelphia Phillies. Those whispers came to fruition with a two-year agreement on a new extension between the two sides on...

Roy Halladay could return to the Phillies rotation in the coming weeks

After going through a grueling rehab process and blazing through bullpen session after bullpen session, Roy Halladay is ready to kick things up another notch.  The Philadelphia Phillies star will head to the team's spring training complex in Clearwater to continue workouts and throw a simulated game. According to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly, Halladay is scheduled to throw...

Chase Utley: A Phillie for Life

The Phillies made the official announcement yesterday that Chase Utley will be a Phillie for life. They have signed him to a contract extension for 2-years at up to $27 million, with 3 option years that would max out the entire contract at around $75 million if he stays all 5 years. He would be 39 years old in the 5th year. There is some risk involved as Utley has battled serious...

Waiver Watch: Michael Young clears waivers, Phillies can now trade

Just earlier today I suggested the Phillies should do whatever they can to move third baseman Michael Young after not doing so prior to the original trade deadline last month. It appears as though something could be in the works, possibly. As originally reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Young has cleared waivers. Source: #Phillies’ M. Young has cleared waivers. Can...

A Blowout WIn, A New Phillie, A Few Firsts, An Era Continues...

A rather exciting afternoon today at Citizens Bank Park. It was one of the more impressive offensive displays of the season from the Phillies. After breaking his on base streak last night, Darin Ruf wound up on base three times today, including a home run. Cody Asche hit his first...

Another Bullpen Meltdown, Another Loss

It was a fun second inning. The Phillies jumped all over Nationals pitcher Taylor Jordan, featuring a two run blast from Darin Ruf, a safety squeeze RBI from Cliff Lee, and the offense batted around. Unfortunately there were seven and a half innings left. Lee wasn't bad tonight. His command...

Phillies-Nationals Preview

Dan Haren appears to have finally found his groove, but he has never beaten the Philadelphia Phillies. Former Washington Nationals starter John Lannan, meanwhile, has given his previous team fits this year. Haren takes the mound opposite Lannan, who returns to the nation's capital for the first time Friday night when the slumping Nationals open a three-game set against the...
