ARLINGTON, Tex. The belief that right-hander Yoshinori Tateyama will pitch the way he did for the Texas in June and July was good enough to convince manager Ron Washington that he belonged on the American League Championship Series roster.
"Tateyama held us together in June and July when we were struggling," Washington said. "In the first round we wanted to protect ourselves with the extra player. This time around Tateyama gets a chance to get in there simply because Detroit's lineup is right-handed heavy."
The addition of Tateyama gives the Rangers eight relievers for the series and just two catchers. Matt Treanor was on the roster for the American League Division Series but didn't play in any of the four games.
Tateyama went 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA for Texas and shined early. He was recalled from Round Rock in May and his ERA was 2.37 in late August. But he struggled over the season's final months and had an ERA of 23.14 in four September appearance...
