San Diego Padres right-hander Casey Kelly will have Tommy John surgery on his pitching arm the first week of April. Padres general manager Josh Byrnes confirmed that plan on Friday morning. Kelly is expected to miss 12 to 18 months rehabbing after the procedure. Kelly said on Monday that doctors found small tears in his right ulnar collateral ligament. He was having pain during a March 7 spring outing, which prompted a closer examination the following week. Kelly was shut down due to elbow pain twice during the 2012 season. He was 2-3 with a 6.21 ERA in six starts last season and was a candidate for this season's starting rotation.

Three for the Show: Starting Pitching

This is the ninth (don’t blink, it’s almost over) in a ten-part series where I will identify the top three players at each position in the Padres’ minor league system. Up next: Starting Pitching. I’ll start off with a couple of disclaimers. I realize that pitching is pitching and that starters easily become relievers and vice versa. However, for my own sanity, I opted to...

30-1 MLB countdown previews: #19 Padres

It is difficult to predict which teams will overachieve during spring training. Yet, you will still find some who claimed to know the 2012 Orioles and Athletics would be as good as they were. Sometimes over thinking leads to faulty predictions. Looking at the finish the San Diego Padres had to the 2012 season, it is my educated guess to see this team taking a major step when it comes...

The Gyorko Store Called, It’s Running Out of Jedd

Jedd Gyorko wins 2nd base job, yay says fantasy baseballers and Richard Kelly. The next thing you know, ol' Jedd will head off to Beverly, Hills that is. On road trips to Los Angeles. Or Magic Johnson will just give him $100 million to sit next to Dee Gordon and Ryu. "You use your free tickets yet to see Jack the Giant Slayer at Magic Johnson theaters?" That'...

The Netherlands has done a lot of travelling for the World Baseball Classic. The journey started with a training camp in Arizona. Then the Dutch national team opened the international tournament in Taichung, Taiwan, flew to Tokyo for the second round and stopped in Arizona for a two exhibitions before they head to San Francisco for the WBC semifinals. Former Red Sox Prospect Casey Kelly Could Be Looking at Tommy John Surgery After Concerning Elbow Tests

The Red Sox’ trade for Adrian Gonzalez prior to the 2011 season was immediately seen as a win for Boston. One of the big drawbacks, though, was having to part ways with Casey Kelly, who looked to have a promising career ahead of him as a major league pitcher. Two years later, Kelly’s immediate future is up in the air. The 23-year-old underwent tests on his sore, right, pitching...

Daily Friar 3.15.13

One thing can be said about the World Baseball Classic: there isn’t a lack of drama! The US could have won the game last night and wrote their ticket to the semis. Instead Craig Kimbrel had a rare meltdown and the Dominican Republic moved on instead. It is not over for the US yet though as they get one more shot tonight to make it to the next round. Standing in their way is Puerto...

Daily Friar 3.13.13

The Padres played under the lights last night as they went to Scottsdale to take on the Giants. Freddy Garcia took the hill and looked to make up for a couple rough outings that he had prior. Well he definitely made up for them and pitched a stellar four innings. The only blemish that he had on his line was a third inning solo home run, but other than that he gave up only three hits...
