The White Sox have traded minor league RHP Jeff Soptic to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for 3B prospect Conor Gillaspie (video). So, time to learn a bit more about Gillaspie, the 25 year-old former first round sandwich pick out of Witchita State, having played there with Kenny Williams' son. Lifetime in the minor leagues (514 games, parts of 5 seasons), Gillaspie is a lifetime .287 hitter, but has lacked the power numbers you like to see out of a corner infielder. But in 2012 there was improvement, as he hit 14 long balls for San Fran's AAA affiliate while maintaining a .281 average. Though he's not a speedster, he's known for his great energy and hustle play-in and play-out. He may be able to challenge Angel Sanchez for the utility role with the White Sox, but it's a bit more likely that he starts out the season in the minor leagues, with Sanchez still holding the upper hand. Nonetheless, considering how thin the White Sox are as far as lefty bats go, it's a good thing that the club has Gillaspie ... even if it is only for insurance. In order to make room for Gillaspie on the 40-man roster, the team has designated Lars Anderson for assignment. Check out what the Chicago Sun Times' Daryl Van Schouwen had to say about the deal here.
