The New York Mets, like many other teams in Major League Baseball, have been relatively quiet this offseason. Teams are taking a wait and see approach as the offseason drags on. That will likely change next week, when the Baseball Winter Meetings begin in Dallas. The Mets will likely begin to heat up the hot stove and actually…you know…START SIGNING PLAYERS. The Mets are currently waiting for Jose Reyes to see what he can demand on the open market…hoping he’ll come back to them and give them a chance to match or exceed another team’s offer. On top of the HUGE Reyes question, the Mets need to find a closer, some starting pitching, identify a 2B, and possibly find a centerfielder. There’s a lot of work for Sandy Alderson to do before March rolls around.
The Winter Meetings are where the offseason really begins to take shape. While big free agent signings and trades might not happen while the meetings are in session, the groundwork is often la...

Jose Reyes Sweepstakes Down To Mets and Marlins?
Several sources are now reporting that the market for Jose Reyes is not as big as most initially expected and in fact the only two teams in the hunt may be just the Marlins and the Mets.
Jon Heyman reported that the Braves, Giants and Phillies are all out while the Tigers and Brewers are questionable at best. Danny Knobler of CBS Sports actually goes a step further and...
SI.com: Mets holding out hope for Reyes
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Mets are holding out hope that they can resign Jose Reyes.
Heyman says the Mets would do a five year deal at an overall value of $80 million, or in other words, an average of $16 million per year. But the team will not go to a sixth or seventh year.
Heyman adds that, depending on the source, he’s been told the Marlins initial offer to...
Mets Prepared To Offer Jose Reyes “Carl Crawford” Err “Jason Bay” Money
More news on the Reyes front
In case you missed it yesterday, Jose Reyes was apparently flying to Miami today after eating a cheese steak in Philly on Tuesday, but that was debunked 20 minutes later… Compelling stuff…

What If Jose Reyes Had Switched Agents?
Before you read this, understand that I want nothing more than to see the Mets re-sign Jose Reyes (within reason). That said, I want to shed some light on all the latest Jose Reyes news of the last 2-3 days with the caveat that I do so not as a biased Mets fan, but as an impartial and objective observer.
Some facts:
Over one month into the process, and Jose Reyes has only been...
Alderson hopes to talk to Reyes' agents soon
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson hopes to speak with free-agent shortstop Jose Reyes' agents in the next few days.
Don't expect the Mets to make any big decisions quickly, though. Alderson said in a conference call with reporters Thursday ahead of baseball's winter meetings that begin Monday in Dallas the market for the NL batting champion still remains unclear to...
Sandy Alderson On If Jose Reyes Is A Franchise Player
Last night, Sandy Alderson hosted a conference call with a few Mets bloggers that was by far the best one I ever participated in. We had some great questions from everyone and Sandy, who was very cordial, took his time and answered all of our questions concisely and proficiently. The tone of the call was kind of upbeat and it was interesting to hear how passionate everyone was about...
Video: Alderson on the trade market, the team’s needs, and Reyes
Checkout this conference call between Mets beat reporters and GM Sandy Alderson which covers a variety of information including the trade market and its influence on closers, the team’s needs (the bullpen, a catcher, a second baseman or shortstop (“depending on what happens” with Reyes), and of course Jose Reyes:
So, basically we learned nothing from this conference...

Mets GM Alderson: Market for Reyes remains unclear
NEW YORK (AP) -- Mets general manager Sandy Alderson hopes to speak with free-agent shortstop Jose Reyes' agents in the next few days.
Alderson expects to talk to Reyes’ agents in coming days
If the Mets have serious competition for Jose Reyes other than the Marlins, it’s news to Sandy Alderson.
The Mets general manager yesterday said he’s unaware of any outside offers for the All-Star shortstop other than Miami’s reported bid in the $75-$90 million range over six...
