New York Yankees starter David Phelps knew he had his work cut out for him as he matched up against Tampa Ba Rays All-Star left-hander David Price on Wednesday, but the 25-year-old right-hander was up to the task.

Phelps held the Rays to one run on two hits over 4 1/3 innings before his pitch count caught up to him, but the youngster did the job to keep the Yankees in the game against the hard-throwing Tampa Bay lefty.

"Phelpsy pitched great. He's really stepped up for us and deserves a lot of credit for today," Mark Teixeira said after the Yankees' 4-3 win over the Rays. "He almost matched Price pitch-for-pitch the way he was throwing. When they have a guy like that on the mound, it's really important for us to keep the game close."

Both starters carried no-hitters into the fourth, but the Rays got to Phelps in that inning, as Sean Rodriguez's two-out single scored Ben Zobrist, who walked and stole second earlier in the inning.

Phelps' day ended with one out in the fifth, but not before he struck out a career-high eight batters. In his three starts this season, Phelps has posted a 2.08 ERA, though he's failed to make it out of the fifth in any of them because of a high pitch count.

"I'm frustrated with the three walks and the pitch count getting as high as it did, but I kept us in the game in the game and just gave us a chance to win," Phelps said. "I mean, 85 pitches I want to obviously get through the fifth and maybe more. It should have happened today."

Phelps was filling in for the injured CC Sabathia, who is scheduled to return from the DL after the All-Star break. Phelps could be sent back down to Class AAA to continue pitching as a starter, but he proved that he can get the job done at the big-league level if the Yankees need him again.

"I'm just trusting my stuff a little more and I'm letting what happens, happen," Phelps said. "I'm not really worried about it. Just going out there and trying to get outs."
