Since winning in Phoenix – the second race of the 2012 Sprint Cup Series season – Denny Hamlin had kind of fallen off the map. In the six races since the win, he had finished inside the top-10 just once, and he had fallen from the point lead back to sixth in the standings.
Sunday in Kansas Hamlin found himself in contention all day long. After starting fourth he had hovered in or around the top-five for the majority of the afternoon, and with just 30 laps to go he zoomed past Martin Truex Jr. for the lead. Truex had led 173 laps on the day, but from that point on it would be all Hamlin the rest of the way.
