After an on-track incident between the Kurt Busch, driver of the No. 51 Phoenix Racing Chevrolet, and Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet, spilled over to pit road during the Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway Saturday night, NASCAR saw fit to hand down penalties to parties on both teams.
On Tuesday, NASCAR released a statement announcing that Busch has been fined $50,000 and placed on probation until July 25. NASCAR cited section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing; reckless driving on pit road during the race; involved in an altercation with another competitor after the completion of the race) of its rule book.
Craig Strickly, a crew member on the No. 51 team, was fined $5,000 and placed under probation until Dec. 31 for violation of section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing; interfering with a member of the broadcast media).
