Brian Vickers has been working on a Sprint Cup Series return for the past year and a half. That quest got a boost this past week when he was announced as the replacement driver for Denny Hamlin. Hamlin is recovering from injuries sustained during the last lap of the Auto Club 400 from the Auto Club Speedway. Vickers has already been lined up to run a partial Sprint Cup Series with Michael Waltrip Racing, but driving for Hamlin will add an additional four races to his schedule and hopefully impress car owners for a ride next year. “It’s a huge opportunity for me.  I feel like I’m very fortunate to have both of these opportunities — to be in the 55, which I consider a great car and then to go drive the 11.  I welcome the opportunity and the challenge — I look forward to being in it. Obviously, that team and that car have run good for a long time.  Darian (Grubb, 11 crew chief) has won championships and he’s a very good crew chief — I’ve known him for a long time so I look forward to w...

Opportunities differ for Martin, Vickers in No. 11

The drivers replacing the injured Denny Hamlin view their opportunities differently. Mark Martin hopes jumping in Hamlin's No. 11 Toyota at Martinsville Speedway this weekend provides a chance to change his career of disappointment on the shortest, trickiest oval in NASCAR's top series. Hamlin has won four times in 15 starts at Martinsville. Martin has won twice in 48 starts...

Substitute driver Brian Vickers can empathize with Denny Hamlin

In picking Brian Vickers to substitute for Denny Hamlin, Joe Gibbs Racing got a driver who can empathize with what Hamlin is feeling while he waits to return to his car. Vickers will start a stint of indeterminate length in the No. 11 Toyota next weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, as Hamlin continues to recover from a compression fracture of the first lumbar vertebra suffered during...

After the bell

The fireworks at Martinsville didn't end with the checkered flag. Brian Vickers, Kevin Harvick and Danica Patrick were racing hard for 11th, 12th and 13th off the final corner, and there was no dearth of contact between their cars. Ultimately, Vickers got to the stripe first, followed by Patrick and Harvick. As the cars sped toward Turn 1 after the checkers, Harvick gave Vickers...

Payback is always coming in NASCAR

Denny Hamlin believes that justice will be served. While NASCAR deduced that the March 24 incident between Hamlin and Joey Logano in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Auto Club Speedway was just a racing deal, Hamlin still believes that the accident -- which left him sidelined for at least the next four races -- was indeed intentional. However, Hamlin did not take issue with NASCAR...

Toyota Racing Qualifying Recap – Sprint Cup Series

BRIAN VICKERS, No. 55 Jet Edge Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing | Starting Position: 3rd How was your lap? “I don’t know that I did. I don’t know that I didn’t, but I don’t know that I did. You’re kind of scratching your head like, ’Man, could I have got a little more out of it?’ It’s so tight here at Martinsville. It’s such a great race track. It’s a...

Martin Happy To Help Joe Gibbs Racing

Mark Martin will be stepping into the #11 FedEx Toyota this weekend at the Martinsville Speedway in a one off race to help the team while normal driver Denny Hamlin recovers from injuries suffered in the last race in Fontana. Martin spoke to the media Friday about the relief effort and what it means to get behind the wheel of a car that has been a proven winner at Martinsville. “I’ve...

You can block, but expect consequences

Denny Hamlin's wreck, the result of hard racing from Joey Logano as both drivers battled for the win at Fontana, wasn't the only nastiness that occurred at the two-mile track. On the final restart, Logano blocked Tony Stewart and broke his momentum, costing Stewart a chance to win the race. After the race, an angry Stewart confronted Logano on pit road, as crew members...

Crash course in racetrack etiquette

It's been 37 years since Elton John first sang "Sorry seems to be the hardest word." It might take the same amount of time before Denny Hamlin hears an apology from Joey Logano. "I thought it was just hard racing, to be honest with you," Logano said of the closing laps with Hamlin at Auto Club Speedway two weeks ago. "I felt like I just got in too hard...

Different strokes

As NASCAR Sprint Cup practice progressed on Saturday, Mark Martin was working hard to find a happy medium for the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota he'll drive in Sunday's STP Gas Booster 500 as a substitute for injured Denny Hamlin. Martin started out Friday with Hamlin's baseline setup, and it wasn't to his liking. Unable to overcome a tendency for the car to drag...

Will payback come at Martinsville?

In recent weeks there have been several incidents that have created drama and controversy in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. Unfortunately for Joey Logano, he has been at the center of them. It started at Bristol Motor Speedway when Logano, while running strong in second place, was hit from the rear by Denny Hamlin. The bump resulted in Logano spinning out and making contact with the...

This Week in NASCAR

If you haven't been under a pile of snow for the last two weeks, you have heard endless media coverage regarding Denny Hamlin's injury, Joey Logano's lack of remorse, feuds, rivalries and crashes.  But what about the racing? C'mon folks, we are at Martinsville!  This is the epitome of short tracks, and no doubt there will be more rivalries, more feuds and...

NASCAR Returns to Rough 'n' Tumble Short Track

1. Back to the scene of the (original) crime With the he-said, he-said war of words and fenders that Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin have...

Super Sub

Mark Martin wasn't impressed with his own performance, but, after starting 35th, he still managed to post a top 10 subbing for four-time Martinsville winner Denny Hamlin, who is sidelined with a compression fracture in his first lumbar vertebra. Martin fought the handling of his No. 11 Toyota Camry, losing a lap at one point, but he rallied for a 10th-place finish, good enough...
