Since the 2009-10 Celtics roster is just about finalized, and with so much talk about the depth of this years' Celtics squad, I thought I'd compare it with the previous two seasons' final rosters. On top of that, I'll give my take on which team was better at each position. Here are the rosters, with the starters listed in bold: 2007/08 2008/09 2009/10 PG Rajon Rondo PG Rajon Rondo PG Rajon Rondo PG Sam Cassell PG Stephon Marbury SG Ray Allen PG Gabe Pruitt PG Gabe Pruitt SG Eddie House SG Ray Allen SG Ray Allen SG Tony Allen SG Eddie House SG Eddie House SG JR Giddens SG Tony Allen SG Tony Allen SG Lester Hudson SF Paul Pierce SF JR Giddens SF Paul Pierce SF James Posey SF Paul Pierce SF Marquis Daniels PF Kevin Garnett SF Bill Walker SF Bill Walker PF PJ Brown PF Kevin Garnett PF Kevin Garnett PF Leon Powe PF Leon Powe PF Glen Davis PF Brian Scalabrine PF Glen davis PF Shelden Williams PF Glen Davis PF Brian Scalabrine PF Brian Scalabrine C Kendrick Perkins C Kendrick Perkins C Kendrick Perkins C Scot Pollard C Mikki Moore C Rasheed Wallace Point GuardOne glaring hole that I see for this season is - who is going to backup Rondo? There has been talk of Marquis Daniels taking some of those minutes, and Eddie House will likely see some time there as well. And realistically, those are the only two guys that can handle it. But the question is - is it all that big of a deal (injuries aside)? After all, it can be argued that the backup point guard spot has been sort of a weakness the past three years anyway. And with Rondo likely seeing upwards of 38-40 minutes per game, it's not like a combo of Daniels/House backing up the one can hurt the Celtics that much. While there is an obvious lack of depth (in a "true point guard" sense) compared to the past two seasons, it is likely a moot point, barring serious injury. And if the Celtics lose Rondo for a significant amount of time, no backup point guard will save them anyway.Edge: 2007/08 (Rondo/Cassell/Pruitt) - Sam Cassell not only hit some big shots, his lockerroom presence was equally as vital and cannot be over-estimated. Shooting GuardFor the third straight year, the shooting guard spot seems as good as gold (and gold is good these days). Ray Allen and Eddie House will once again form a nice 1-2 punch at the two. Tony Allen will now be the third option (as well as the third option at SF), a position that, hopefully, better suits him. JR Giddens, if he isn't traded, will (hopefully) see quite a bit of garbage time, and maybe some somewhat meaningful minutes. And whatever the Celtics get from Lester Hudson is just gravy. Depth is not an issue for the Celtics at shooting guard. I'll take Ray Allen/Eddie House/ over any SG combo in the league right now. 'Nuff said.Edge: 2009/10 (R. Allen/House/Daniels/T. Allen - While three of these guys are holdovers from the past two seasons, the fact that Daniels can also play the two pushes this year's team over the top at this position. Small ForwardThe Captain. The Truth. Honestly, what's there not to like about having Paul Pierce as your starting SF (although I would love it if they didn't have to announce him as "The Captian...aaaaaaaannd The Truth" before every home game - it annoys me for some reason)? He's a warrior. The embodiment of Celtic Pride. Last season, there was no James Posey behind him. And it took it's toll. At the end of the season, Pierce was tired. Beat up. Hurt. But he still almost single-handedly (he had some help from Ray Allen and Rondo) carried the Celtics through the playoffs and almost pushed them past the eventual Eastern Conference Champion Orlando Magic. This season, Pierce has Marquis Daniels to spell him. And while Daniels is probably not James Posey, he is a definite upgrade from what the Celtics had last year (nothing). Add-in the upside of Bill Walker, and the Celtics have the talent at small forward that rivals that of the 2008 championship squad.Edge: 2007/08 (Pierce/Posey) - It remains to be seen what effect Marquis Daniels will have on this year's team, but it cannot be denied how important Big Game James was to the Celtics in '08. Power ForwardOh, what could have been last year had Kevin Garnett stayed healthy? My guess is that I'd be planning my Phoenix-to-Boston trip again this year to watch another banner be raised. But the reality is that the Celtics will be trying to strip the Lakers of their crown - and they'll need a healthy Kevin Garnett to do it. Early reports are that KG looks good, and is ready to make good on his promise (at least 2 titles in the next 3 years). While KG is a question mark headed into this season, the depth at the four isn't. The Celtics signed F-C Rasheed Wallace. Re-signed Big Baby. And rolled the dice on the upside(?) of Shelden Williams. And lets not forget our favorite red-headed poster-child for hustle - Brian "Scabs" Scalabrine.Losing Leon Powe sucks, but the fact is that the Celtics' depth, and versatility in the paint ('Sheed and Scabs can play F or C), is superior compared to what they've had the previous two seasons. Edge: 2009/10 (Garnett/Davis/Wallace/Scalabrine) - This one was tougher for me than you might think. Okay, it wasn't. But PJ Brown's shot in Game 7 against Cleveland still replays in HD-quality in my mind. But, as much as I like PJ Brown, and what he brought to the team in 2008, Rasheed Wallace will bring more. Book it. CenterIt's been an absolute joy to watch Kendrick Perkins grow from a doughy high school kid into Perkosaurus. He's the enforcer. The intimidator. And, in my opinion, damn near as important to the success of the Celtics as anyone on the roster. He is the one center in the NBA that can contain both Dwight Howard and Shaquille Oneal. No one else in the entire NBA can lay claim to that. If the Celtics win number 18 this season, Perk will not be get the popular-vote for team MVP - but he very well could be. For once, Perk will have someone else besides Scabs (and, sigh, Mikki Moore) to back him up, as Rasheed Wallace will shift over to the five when KG is on the floor, and/or when Perk needs a rest. Regardless of who is on the floor, the Celtics have their best rotation at center in years. Reminds me a little bit Parish/Walton.Edge: 2009/10 (Perkins/Wallace/Scalabrine) - This took me about .0001 seconds to decide on. Perkins and Wallace, along with Scalabrine, are light years ahead of a Perkins/Moore combo. ConclusionAs you can see, it's my opinion that the Celtics are better off this year than in '08 in 3 out of 5 positions, and in all of them compared to last year. It's not that I didn't like last year's team, but it proved evident that lacking depth can, and usually will, come back to haunt a team. And while there is little "true" depth behind Rondo, this Celtics squad seems loaded at every other position. The versatility on this team reminds me a lot of the '07-'08 team, with at least two players (Wallace, Daniels) that can play multiple positions - and play them well. Whether they can hang a banner on this claim remains to be seen, but they have a pretty good shot at doing it - if healthy.
