With no practices in the near future, the Celtics sent their rookies, Fab Melo and Kris Joseph, to the Maine Red Claws so that they can at least get some playing time in. Reports from their first practices are very positive. Both of these players have the potential to be very, very good. In Melo's case, possibly even dominant. Their time with the Red Claws can only help, especially with the changes made this season. Prior to this season, the Celtics shared the Red Claws with at least one other NBA team. The system they ran was whatever the coach wanted to run with a few plays from both teams. Players being sent to the Red Claws got playing time, but they didn't get to reinforce their understanding of the Celtics plays or their system. Players could also be sent down and called up 3 times in a season so the Celtics. This season, the Celtics have taken over basketball operations of the Red Claws and are the only team affiliated with them. The Celtics chose the coach and the system they are running is the same one run by the parent club. They can also send players down and call them up as many times as they want. So, during stretches like this one, where there are no practices, the Celtics can send them down and call them back up if there is a stretch of a couple of days where they can practice and the rookies would benefit from it. As a case in point that they are running the Celtics system, DaQuan Brooks, a guard with the Red Claws, posted this tweet. It's crazy watchin the celtics and knowing their offense — DaQuan Brooks (@DaQuan23) November 16, 2012 Red Claws coach, Mike Taylor had this to say about the Celtics' rookies, They came in today with our first practice and fit in really well with the guys. They have a great attitude and we're really excited about having them in Maine. Fab brings tremendous defense. He's got great hands and feet and he's got a really good positive attitude. Kris Joseph is an outstanding scoring wing. We're really excited about both of these guys coming down and what they'll bring to our team at the D-League level. Fab started playing late in life, but he's got so much upside when he gains on-court experience. What I'm going to do is give him some experience playing the game, coach him and help him try to build the right habits. At the end of his time here, he'll make significant strides. Taylor also discussed what his plans for Kris Joseph, Syracuse's leading scorer last season. He sees the bond between the former Syracuse teammates as a positive to help both of the players as they develop. For Kris, we want to make him more of a complete offensive player and build the right habits defensively within the Celtics' system. Kris had a really good preseason in terms of practices (in Boston) and was very impressive to the Celtics staff. So this is more about him coming down to get experience and working on part of his game. Hopefully at some point, he'll be back up with the Celtics and being very productive for them. Fab's new teammates are commenting on his impact as well. Forward Omar Reed is impressed with Fab's sense of humor. Players with a good sense of humor are always good to keep the team loose. Practice tonight was alright.. Didn't like losing the mini scrimmage.. and Fab Melo is one funny dude.. — Omar Reed (@DaJuice55) November 15, 2012 In other news, Doc Rivers son, Jeremiah, who was drafted by the Red Claws, failed his physical Sunday. Rivers is recovering from surgeries on both ankles in February. Jeremiah is still in Portland, but his status with the team is uncertain. With Rivers not playing, Maine has 15 players. The roster must be down to 10 next week. [Discuss on CG Forums!]
