Wow, Jackie MacMullan on Sportscenter saying there's a possibility that Danny Ainge is head coach next year for the Celtics
— Umair Khan (@UKhanNBA) June 23, 2013
With the deal finally done to send Doc Rivers to the LA Clippers for a 2015 first round draft pick, it's time to start thinking about who will be taking over the Celtics as head coach. I've seen Lionel Hollins, George Karl, Brian Shaw, Tyronn Lue, David Fizdale (Heat Asst.), and Kevin Garnett all suggested as viable replacements. But, Jackie MacMullan came up with a name I haven't heard before, but it makes a certain degree of sense.
For one thing, in this strictly rebuilding season, the Celtics don't want to pay a lot for a coach. They also need a coach who can get the respect of the players because some are certain to feel disrespected or deserted by Doc's sudden departure to coach another team. Rondo just pledged his allegiance to Doc in an interview and said that he didn't want to play for any other coach. It's going to be hard for another coach to come in and get his respect right away.
Danny knows the personnel and the system. He knows the organization. And, he should have the respect of all of them. Danny is a Celtic. He won two championships with the Celtics. After retiring in 1995, Danny became the head coach of the Phoenix Suns the following year. His coaching record was 136-90. He resigned as coach of the Suns in the 1999-2000 season because he wanted to be able to spend more time with his family. Danny was a good coach but he was considerably younger back then. I think he'd be a good coach, but the question is, why would he want to put himself through all that again. It's an interesting thought.

Jackie MacMullan went on ESPN last night and said she expects Boston to hire a young (and cheap) up and comer to replace Doc Rivers, rather than an established veteran. Gary Washburn reiterated the same thing on Sportscenter this morning. Yesterday Adrian Wojnarowski wrote that Doc is likely taking his assistants Tyronn Lue and Kevin Eastman to LA with him, and in...
In the NBA vernacular, this is known as a "Woj bomb". Or a nugget of information that for many writers would be a major scoop, but for Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski, who breaks nearly every major NBA story, is just worthy of a sentence or two in paragraph six.
Tonight, while discussing Doc Rivers joining the Clippers, Woj discussed how the deal impacted both Chris...
As of Monday afternoon, the NBA still had not approved the deal for Doc Rivers to join the Clippers as their new coach and for the Boston Celtics to receive a first-round pick in 2015 from L.A.
The two sides had agreed in principle on the deal Sunday.
According to one league official, the NBA has been waiting to get all the necessary paperwork from the Clippers, Celtics and Rivers...
Celtics assistant Mike Longabardi has accepted an offer to take a similar position in Phoenix, a source tells the Globe.

Happy 80th Birthday to Celtics great, Sam Jones. Sam played all 12 of his seasons with the Boston Celtics, who drafted him in the first round in 1957. In those 12 seasons, he won 10 championship rings. Only one player has more, his teammate Bill Russell. Sam was a great scorer and his perfect form when shooting his jumper, along with his great clutch shooting earned him the...
Two second-round draft picks in exchange for Paul Pierce?
If that seems like a bargain for a 10-time NBA All-Star and NBA Finals MVP, that’s because it probably is. But the Cavaliers might as well send out the feeler.
Cleveland has reportedly offered the Celtics those two second-round picks in exchange for the 35-year-old Pierce before this Thursday’s NBA draft, according to...
It appears the Doc Rivers saga has finally concluded.
It was originally reported Sunday afternoon that the Celtics and Clippers had agreed to a deal that would send Rivers to Los Angeles and a first-round draft pick in 2015 to Boston as compensation. That proposal could not be completed without league approval, though, which has now reportedly been granted.
Sources confirmed to ESPN’s...
After much too much talking, the Celtics and Clippers finally agreed to trade Doc Rivers yesterday, and as a result Los Angeles now has a new coach. And, they’re hoping, a worldclass point guard ready to resign. It all makes sense.
Here’s what doesn’t make sense though – 2 weeks of negotiations yielded Boston…a 2014 1st round pick? Right, the Celts need to get younger,...
The Minnesota Timberwolves are expected to pursue Kevin Garnett for a ceremonial role in their ownership when he retires from the NBA, according to sources.
Garnett has two seasons remaining on his contract with the Boston Celtics, but may play just one more season before reuniting with Flip Saunders.
"The opportunity will be there for him," one source said, "but there...
With the NBA Draft just around the corner, one of the biggest busts in all of sports has called it a career in the Association.
According to FSD Detroit who cites a Serbian website, Darko Milicic has announced that his NBA career is in deed over.
The 7-foot Milicic, taken with the 2nd overall pick in 2003 by the Pistons was a complete flop from the beginning. With Detroit, the human...
The news is not shocking, but with the NBA, sometimes you never know. ESPN L.A. is reporting that the NBA has approved of the Clippers acquisition of head coach Doc Rivers from the Celtics in exchange for a 2015 first round pick.

Doc Rivers will have more control on personnel decisions with the Los Angeles Clippers than he did with the Boston Celtics.
Rivers had a good relationship with Danny Ainge, but was far from the final decision-maker.
Gary Sacks is the general manager of the Clippers though he has been in the position for just one season.
Looks as if the Los Angeles Clippers feel Celtics head coach Doc Rivers is the key to their future success. The two teams have reportedly worked out terms that will allow Rivers to take over the head coaching reins for his former team -Doc spent one year with the franchise in the 90′s.
Sources confirmed on Sunday that the Clippers will sign Rivers to a three-year, $21 million...
