Does someone else need to start scoring? After the Celtics 95-94 OT loss in Philly a little over a week ago, Magic Johnson said something on the ESPN post-game show that has stuck with me.  Magic stated that in order for Boston to contend, Rajon Rondo was going to have to score 20-25 points a game.  While I don't believe Rondo is about to be that guy, I am starting to wonder if Magic might be right. Heading into that night Boston had gone 4 straight games without a 20 point scorer, the first time the franchise had done that since November of 2003.  Paul Pierce put up 27 in the overtime defeat that evening.  Since then a Celtics player has reached the 20 point plateau just once, Pierce again (34) in the 117-115 double OT victory over Dallas.  Amazingly you have to go back 11 games and 24 days to find the last time a Boston player scored 20 in a non-overtime contest (Pierce's 27 in the 108-100 win over OKC on November 23rd). To be fair Pierce did top 20 points in regulation...

Enemy Chatter: Where it seemed Rondo didn’t suit up

We often wonder what opposing teams, their beat reporters and bloggers are saying about the Celtics. Here’s a look at some enemy chatter from San Antonio. Parker dominated his individual matchup with fellow All-Star Rajon Rondo, outscoring him by 16 and nearly matching him in assists, eight to nine. He also had four steals to none for Rondo, who was so quiet for most of the game...

An encouraging explanation for Pierce's poor shooting

Paul Pierce is currently shooting 41.4% from the floor this year.  It's easily his worst FG% since he shot 40.2% in 2003-'04.  The eyeball test seems to tell us that he's advancing in age and has lost a step.  But, there is also good reason to be optimistic that Pierce's shooting will improve as the season goes on.  From a column this morning by WEEI's Ben...

Celtics Playbook: Paul Pierce Off-Screen Plays

We covered much of Paul Pierce’s work so far over the weekend, but against San Antonio, he showed us a way that he could probably be utilized more as the season progresses. When the Celtics use Pierce in Off Screen plays, he has been pretty average. His efficiency isn’t elite — 0.86 PPP, good for 23rd in the NBA — but it’s sufficient. What’s surprising is that Off Screen...

Rondo Vs. James: All Hail King Rondo

For those of you who are new to TSHQ, first of all welcome. Grab a seat. Would you like a drink? I believe K.M. Venne and Cole Zwicker were just discussing the intricacies of JaVale McGee’s self-indulgent retweets of himself over a fine burbon whiskey. Toward the early days of this sites inception onto the world wide web I penned a short article about why Rajon Rondo was more important...

Celtics' Pierce comments on difficulty of defending Spurs

The days when the San Antonio Spurs had one dimensional players besides the "Big 3" of Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, and Manu Ginobili are gone. The Spurs no longer rely on a simple pick and roll along with a Tim Duncan "4 Down" like they used to in a predictable offense. Now the Spurs have a whole team full of versatile players who can dribble, drive, kick the...

Boston 89, Chicago 100 - Effort Not There as Celtics Fall in Chicago

To win in the NBA, it takes effort. The Boston Celtics did not bring enough effort, losing to the Chicago Bulls, 100-89. The Celtics were able to keep things close through three quarters, but let things get away from them in the final frame. There was just a supreme lack of defensive intensity all night, as the Bulls scored 24-plus points in all four quarters. The Bulls were quicker...

Tired Celtics Fall to Spurs 103-88

The Celtics dropped their second straight game, falling to the San Antonio Spurs 103-88. It was the second of back to back games and although the Celtics hung with the Spurs in the first half, they played from behind for much of the game and clearly ran out of gas in the second half and that's when the Spurs took advantage and raced out to a double digit lead. Boston Celtics...

Celtics-Bulls Preview

Kirk Hinrich's return didn't prevent the Chicago Bulls from finishing with their lowest point total in five seasons. Now they are hoping Hinrich can help slow down Rajon Rondo and the Boston Celtics. The turnover-prone Rondo turned in a huge effort the first time these teams met last month, and his Celtics will try to end a four-game road slide Tuesday night. Hinrich returned...

Cosby Sweaters 25 Days Of Christmas – Day 18

As a child, one of the best things about the holiday season is the Christmas specials on television. Heck as an adult one of the best things about the holiday season is the Christmas specials on television.  There are all the classics, of course.  Charlie Brown, Rudolph, Frosty, and so on. Today’s entry is one of those holiday specials that doesn’t get the airtime it should...

Spurs pull away in the 4th, defeat Celtics 103-88

Spurs backcourt Tony Parker and Gary Neal combined for 42 points to lead the Spurs over the Celtics 103-88. Paul Pierce and Jason Terry led the Celtics with 19 apiece in the losing effort. Here are some more quick observations: Jason Terry couldn't miss in the 1st half (17 points). Jason Terry couldn't make in the 2nd half (1 point). Manu Ginobili was limited to just over...
