Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers passionately defended Kevin Garnett during an interview on Thursday with Boston radio station WEEI, saying that “I know that as a fact” that KG did not make the much ballyhooed and speculated — but still hilarious — reference to New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony about his wife tasting like Honey Nut Cheerios. While Anthony was suspended for one game by the NBA due to his antics, which began on the court but continued on the Madison Square bus ramp where cell phone video captured he and Garnett exchanging words, KG did not face any punishment for his role in the incident. And the insinuation that Garnett, whose reputation as a prolific smack talker precedes him every time he is involved with a confrontation with another player, has Rivers mad as hell and vehemently defending his player. From WEEI (as transcribed by the New York Daily News): “I’m going to squash this whole crap, because that’s what it is,” Rivers said. “I know what’s being reported did not happen. I know that as a fact,” he continued. “You know how this works, a guy does something crazy like Carmelo did, and the way to get (out) of trouble is to say someone else said this. It happens all the time. “And what bugs me about this is that this is not a Kevin Garnett issue,” Rivers said. “And it was made into one and it shouldn’t have been made into one.” It certainly should come as no surprise that Rivers came to Garnett’s defense, but should his statements be considered simply the case of a coach having one of his player’s backs, or is what Rivers is saying true? Hard to say, but can I still be the coolest kid on the block while wearing this Kevin Garnett-Buzz t-shirt? Because whether the original story is true or not, I love the shirt.
