Dick Harter, former Hornets coach, died of cancer Monday night at his home in Hilton Head, S.C., according to the Portland (Ore.) Tribune.
He was 81.
Harter also coached at the University of Oregon and was assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach.
Harter was legendary for his defensive-minded Ducks, who became known as the "Kamikaze Kids." He led Oregon to three NIT berths during his time at the helm (1971-78). His Ducks went 113-81, and Harter was named Pac-8 coach of the year in 1977.
Harter, from Pottstown, Penn., spent many years in the NBA, including 2 1/2 seasons as head coach of the Hornets.

A spokesman for the Island Funeral Home in Hilton Head, S.C., said Tuesday that Harter died Monday night. The cause of death wasn't immediately released and funeral arrangements were pending.

Another Dreadful Performance
It has become almost commonplace of late, but the Portland TrailBlazers put up another dreadful performance last night. The Indiana Pacers led by as many as 30 points in the fourth quarter before clearing the bench and letting the Blazers cut the final margin to 17.
