Celtics Green ...a boston celtics blog.:
Twenty-five years ago today, on May 22, 1988, the Celtics played the Hawks in game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Little did they know as that game began that this would be a game for the ages with a shooting duel between two of the greatest small forwards in NBA history. It was Larry Legend versus the Human Highlight Reel in an epic showdown destined to become one of the most memorable games in NBA playoff history. In an interesting side note, the point guard for the Hawks in this game was one Glenn "Doc" Rivers, who is now the coach of the Celtics.
Dominique scored 16 of his 47 points in the 4th quarter duel while Bird scored 20 of his 34 points in that final quarter and, more importantly, Bird's Celtics got the 118-116 victory, and a 4-3 win in the series. The Hawks have posted Nique vs. Bird: An Oral History of the NBA's Greatest Playoff Duel on their website and it is a great read to take you back to this iconic game. The one and only Tommy Heinsohn was calling the game for CBS that day.
"It’s a duel. Who’s going to blink first?" -- CBS analyst Tommy Heinsohn
I doubt we will ever see a display of pure basketball greatness like this ever again. As Magic Johnson said, "There will never, ever, ever be another Larry Bird."

The offseason is here for the Boston Celtics, and in just a couple of months, they will begin the process of putting next year’s team together. We will take a look at the current Celtics and try to figure out what to do with each of them. We continue today with Jared Sullinger.
Those two words might as well be tattooed onto Jared Sullinger’s forehead.
The red flag...
As I posted earlier, there is a huge difference among mock drafts as to who the Celtics (and everyone else) are going to pick. Of the 38 mock drafts I checked out at the time, there were 17 different players projected as the Celtics pick at 16. With the lottery in the books and teams holding workouts and players moving up and down in scouts' opinions, things will more than...
Here’s a whopper of a trade rumor, courtesy of New Orleans Pelicans blogger Michael McNamara:
Just heard strange rumor from EC source: Celtics talking about possibility of Pierce and Bradley for Eric Gordon.
Pierce’s contract is only partially guaranteed. Best case scenario: Pelicans can move Pierce for something. Worst case: Buy him out for Five million and have even more cap...
Strange trade rumor has appered today..My collegue Daniel Camachio talked about financial aspect of the story...I m gonna focus on few other details.. This is this guys twitter. He said Pierce would never play a game for NO. Would either be part of another trade or bought out so the pelicans would have more cap this summer. @McNamara247: Just heard strange rumor from EC source...

We really don’t know much about Fab Melo other than he’s a project. In the Syracuse zone defense...
It's been three and a half months since Jared Sullinger underwent season ending surgery for a lumbar disc issue in his back, and the soon to be 2nd year forward is progressing in his rehab.
ESPN Boston's Chris Forsberg caught up with Sully at a charity event, and among other things he discussed the notion that back troubles will continue to bother him. He says that's...
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
Williams, 25, had driven into the parking lot with his son for what was described as a visitation exchange, and was approached by the boy’s mother and her boyfriend. That’s where the story diverges.
From the Boston Globe's Gary Dzen:
James Pallotta, president of the soccer team AS Roma and a minority owner of the Celtics, presented a Celtics jersey to Pope Francis at the Vatican Wednesday. Pallotta was there to represent Roma in the Coppa Italia, a match pitting the team against city rival Lazio.
They better start selling "The Pope" #1 jerseys at the Garden pro...
The All NBA Teams have been announced and to no one's surprise, there
are no Celtics on them. Also to no one's surprise, LeBron James and
Kevin Durant led the voting.
Paul Pierce received 24 votes. Kevin Garnett received 8 votes. Rajon Rondo received 1 vote. As I said, it isn't a big surprise. One thing I would add is that at this point in his career...
ESPN’s Chad Ford has the Celtics taking German point guard Dennis Schroeder (6-2, 195) in his latest mock draft. Here’s the write up on the 19-year-old Schroeder:
Analysis: With Rajon Rondo‘s future up in the air, could the Celtics take the guy who many scouts compare to a young Rondo? Both are quick, long and have huge hands. Both play a frantic style of basketball and both...
Tyronn Lue is being groomed by the Celtics. The 36 year-old former point guard has been tapped to coach their summer league team (pictured, above), and you can hardly cut to a shot of the bench without seeing Doc leaning back to talk to him about something.
But it’s not just the Celtics who like what he’s got to offer.
Boston assistant Ty Lue and Rio Grande head coach Nick...

Trading up in the first round is not out of the question for the Celtics.
The Celtics hold the 16th pick in the 2013 NBA draft, but they may look to deal that pick and a player or a future pick to get into the top 10.
Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix seems to think Boston could be looking to improve their drafting position based on who they've interviewed.
An aside on...
Twenty-five years ago today saw one of the greatest Game 7 duels in NBA playoff history, so do yourself a favor and watch all ten minutes and fifty seconds of heavenly basketball between Dominique Wilkins and Larry Bird. If you’ve seen it before, well, you know what’s up — and it’s still worth a re-watch, of course.

Doc Rivers will not manage the Brooklyn Nets.
Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge, who has long praised his head coach Doc Rivers, has denied the Brooklyn Nets access to speak with Rivers about the open head coaching position, according to Jackie MacMullan of ESPN.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise after the Nets targeted Rivers as...
