Much of the talk this off season has been about coaches.  Twelve teams fired their coaches and are looking for new ones.  Of course, there is the Doc Rivers debacle going on.  So, it seems like a good time to take our minds off all the Doc talk and go back to the Master and read about his coaching philosophy.   Red Auerbach wrote Basketball for the Player, the Fan and the Coach back in 1952.  The book sold for 25 cents originally and eventually sold over a million copies and was published in Polish, Russian, Italian, Japanese and Burmese.  Here are some coaching tips (and gamesmanship) from the man who wrote the book on coaching. When a player notices an official's indecision as to an out of bounds ball, he should run over and pick it up with the full confidence that it is his. Use the hands to hold and block cutters under the basket. Faking injuries is used for many reasons such as stalling for time and giving the impression that a player will not be at his best. Some players may agitate their opponents by incessant chatter., refusing to talk to them at all, or even ridicule. If the opposing team has a high scorer, keep reminding the other players of their uselessness because the scorer takes all the shots. Grabbing or pulling the pants or shirt of the opponent can be very aggravating. During the held or jump balla player can go in and out of the circle with the purpose of getting the opposing jumper's timing off. When an opponent needs one more foul to be disqualified or has a light injury, keep reminding him about it.  Very often slight movement of the body is used to distract the opposing foul shooter. Jockeying from the bench can be annoying. When a player has only one foul left before being disqualified, some member of his team should mention it loud enough for the officials to hear.  This may result in an official hesitating to call a slight infraction. When your opponent makes a good play, don't congratulate him, merely mention that he was lucky.  Place the scorer and timer's table near your bench.  It is not advisable to announce your starting lineup until just before the game.  If you are away from home, it might be wise to see your opponent's lineup before you give your own. Wait until the other team has started warming up and then request their basket.  This request must be   honored away from home.   It's no wonder that Red was alternately copied and hated by opposing coaches, and loved by Celtics nation.  He didn't cheat, but he pushed the limit of gamesmanship to give his team an edge, whatever it took to win.  When it was suggested that he played dirty, Red would have none of it.   He would say, "What's dirty? What's tricky?  Hell, what's winning basketball?  If it's legal and it helps you win, you do it."   Pat Riley, former Lakers' coach, always felt that Red would do anything to get an edge. When the Lakers were awakened by a fire alarm in the middle of the night in their Boston hotel, Riley suspected Red. There was no air conditioning in the old Boston Garden and Game 5 of the 1984 Finals was played on a humid, 95-degree night in Boston. Riley said Red had the heat turned up in the visitor's locker room at the Garden. Red was legend. He was the standard by which all other coaches must be measured., tricks or no tricks. Rivers to Clippers trade dead?

There were talks about Kevin Garnett and Doc Rivers going to the Clippers, but it looks like that trade might not be happening.

From Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski: Celtics and Clippers have had no conversation today on proposed deal, league sources tell Y! — Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) June 16, 2013 It's nice to have a drama free day with no rumors to report in the "Doc's Decision 2013" saga. Clippers preparing press conference for Doc Rivers and KG

Well, we thought this all would come to a head soon, and it has. The Clippers are apparently already preparing to announce Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett. Hearing Clips already prepping for intro press conference for at least Doc & KG. Hard to see deal not being done soon. — Baxter Holmes (@BaxterHolmes) June 17, 2013 To be clear: Paul Pierce is NOT part of this trade....

Brian Shaw rumored to be frontrunner to succeed Doc Rivers as head coach of the Celtics

The name I've heard most as a possible replacement for Doc Rivers if he leaves the Celtics: Brian Shaw. — Baxter Holmes (@BaxterHolmes) June 17, 2013 Brian Shaw has been bouncing around like a pinball the past few weeks. As soon as Shaw misses out on one coaching gig, as another team hires a coach, he immediately becomes a front runner for another team. Who knows what type...

Woj Reports: Boston Celtics, LA Clippers in 'deep discussion' regarding Rivers, Garnett

Earlier on Saturday, I wrote about my disdain of this entire Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce to the LA Clippers gossip mill. CLNS columnist, Rich Conte, added his 2 cents shortly after. We both stated our hesitance to believe any such rumors regarding Doc, Danny and the crew. I'm not that easily swayed but now the ever reliable, Adrian Wojnarowski is in the mix and had...

Report: Clippers Walk Away From Deal For KG, Doc Rivers is reporting that according to sources, the trade talks between the Clippers and Celtics for Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett have totally fallen apart, with the Clippers walking away. That Crazy Celts-Clippers Deal Is Dead

For the past few days, the big “will they wont they” story has been Doc Rivers and KG possibly being traded to the Clips. Well, that’s just fallen apart sources say. LA refused to give up DeAndre Jordan and two 1st rounders, as well as presumably Eric Bledsoe, all in exchange for letting Doc out of his contract and the elder Garnett. It’s just as well. There’s only room...

Celtics & Clippers in talks to make KG trade happen

I’m just about as sick of this as everyone else, but it’s getting serious now. Adrian Wojnarowski reports: The Boston Celtics are deep in discussions with the Los Angeles Clippers on a blockbuster deal to send coach Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett to Los Angeles, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The final hurdle of a deal centers on the Clippers’ willingness to include...

Celtics reportedly deep in trade talks to send Garnett, Rivers to Clippers

According to a report by Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski on Saturday, the Celtics are deep in discussions with the Los Angeles Clippers regarding a trade that would send forward Kevin Garnett and the rights to head coach Doc Rivers to Los Angeles. The Clippers are reportedly prepared to send DeAndre Jordan and two first-round picks to Boston in the deal, but the final hurdle...

Why do the Clippers want Doc Rivers?

Phil Jackson says he won because he had great players. While true, Phil Jackson was also a great coach. We saw how bad the Lakers became with Phil not on the sidelines. The Boston Celtics were terrible at basketball before Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen arrived in 2008. Even with Paul Pierce, they were horrendous. You know who was there at that time as well? Doc Rivers. But for some...

Report: Doc Rivers, KG & Paul Pierce Interested in Package Deal to Clippers

It would be complicated, but not impossible. Separate trades for Garnett and Pierce without surrendering Blake Griffin? All do-able —...

Report: Celtics And Clippers Hope To Reach Trade Agreement Monday

The Celtics and Clippers have reportedly resumed trade discussions that would send Kevin Garnett and Doc Rivers to L.A. The talks stalled when the Clippers refused to include Eric Bledose in a deal, but Boston is now showing interest in other possible assets with the hopes of completing a deal on Monday. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports: The Boston Celtics and...

Shootaround: Sticking points

Celtics, Clippers still talking ----- The talk all weekend was about the potential goings on in the back halls at TD Garden. And it was not about the Stanley Cup Final making its way to Boston. There are proverbial moving boxes outside Doc Rivers' office if the team can get this thing figured out. Catching you up in case you had your head buried in the sand, the Celtics...
