Found April 19, 2012 on Red's Army:
Sports Illustrated polled 134 NBA players and asked them which coach they'd most, and least like to play for... and Doc topped the list of most-wanted coaches: DOC RIVERS, CELTICS 22% MIKE D'ANTONI 21% GREGG POPOVICH, SPURS 16%  I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  Kevin Garnett has said he would run through walls for Doc.  Almost every player that has played for Doc loves the guy.  He's a tough guy, but he's fair and he honestly seems to care about his guys.   Mike D'Antoni is easy to peg.  The guy lets you take a million shots.  It's like a kid saying he wants a parent who lets him have all the candy he wants.   "you mean I get to shoot a ton and not play defense?  SIGN. ME. UP!!" Now... as for the coach they'd least like to play for?  Stan Van Gundy.  Probably because of the whole Dwight Howard mess.  When players see Dwight Howard reportedly refusing to play for him anymore... it affects the rest of the league.  Right o...

Doc Rivers tanks game, shows confidence in Celtics

For months Doc Rivers has claimed to value health over home court advantage. Not that we didn’t believe him, but we figured that if the Celtics entered the stretch run needing one specific win to help secure home court, Rivers would make at least a slight attempt to win the outing. The Celtics entered last night with the perfect opportunity to earn the right to host in the first...

Doc Rivers discusses failed Ray Allen/O.J. Mayo trade

Doc Rivers on the failed Ray Allen for O.J. Mayo & a pick trade: "It was a scary moment, for all of us. If you lose Ray that's a scary moment. He's pretty good... I wouldn't want to see Ray, Paul or Kevin ever moved... Even if you got the best deal in the world you're still losing guys you have an attachment with. That would be scary for me or any of us...

Doc Rivers spent extra time investigating Sean Williams’ personality

Kevin Garnett recently called creating chemistry one of the toughest things to do in basketball, but these Celtics have managed to build an environment in which 15 players care about wins more than anything else. Doc Rivers does not want to threaten that growing bond, which is why he spent additional time investigating Sean Williams’ personality before the Celtics acquired him...

Rivers Draws Players Vote As Favorite Coach

Doc Rivers is the coach NBA players most want to play for, according to a recent poll.

Report: Howard won't play for coach

Center Dwight Howard reportedly has decided he doesn't want to play for head coach Stan Van Gundy any longer and will consequently likely sit out of the playoffs.

Some NBA players would prefer playing for Rivers, D'Antoni over Popovich

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has led the Spurs franchise to four NBA titles, is a former NBA Coach of the Year, can take relatively unknown players and make them a key cog in the Spurs machine, and year-in and year-out has San Antonio competing for a championship. Apparently that is not good enough for some NBA players. recently did a player's poll with...

Celtics Live Blog: Doc Rivers Gives Starters Rest in Atlanta for Final Road Game of Season

3 p.m.: This game could be crucial to the Celtics' chances of securing home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, but coach Doc Rivers has made clear that home court is not his top priority. The Celtics (37-26) will rest Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen and Mickael Pietrus on Friday against the Hawks (37-25), who own a half-game advantage on Boston for home court in the best...

Turkoglu doubtful to return for playoffs

Orlando Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu, who had surgery to repair cheekbone fractures two weeks ago, is doubtful to return for the playoffs. "I think it's going to be very tough," coach Stan Van Gundy told the Orlando Sentinel. Turkoglu was expected to miss at least three weeks but Vandy said he was told by trainer Keon Weise that the injury usually needs six to eight...

Report: Howard tells owner he won't play for Van Gundy

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard told team owner Rich DeVos that he won't play for coach Stan Van Gundy anymore, WKMG in Orlando reported on Thursday. Howard was angered that Van Gundy publicly divulged that the superstar center asked management to have him fired, WKMG said, citing sources. Howard made the call to the 86-year-old DeVos during Friday's game against the...

Dwight Howard Didn't Make Statement That He Wasn't Going To Play For Stan Van Gundy

The truth has FINALLY come out about the report claiming that Dwight Howard wasn't going to play anymore under Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy.According to a person who told USA Today, Howard did not call Rich DeVos -- co-founder of the Amway Comporation and owner of the Orlando Magic -- making the statement that he would not play "anymore" as long as Stan Van...

Greg Stiemsma Plows Ahead, Filling Defensive Role for Celtics Despite Foul Troubles

A couple times in every game, Greg Stiemsma will commit a foul and look sheepishly toward the Celtics bench. Doc Rivers will only stare back, not thrilled that his rookie big man fouled a jump shooter with one second left on the shot clock, but not exactly upset, either. It took Stiemsma more than three years to reach the NBA after college, yet at no time did he forget his skill...

When Did it Become OK for Coaches to Publicly Lay Out Their Teams’ Dirty Laundry?

I’m a bit of two minds on this, but I want to see if I can come to a cogent point. When Stan Van Gundy let it be known to the media that Dwight Howard was working to get him fired, minutes before Howard himself was set to face the media, I couldn’t help but stand and slow clap (in my head, of course). It was the ultimate F.U. to Dwight who has ran roughshod over his coach, the...
