February 22, 2012 May 1, 2012 November 29, 2012 January 7, 2013 What do all of these dates have in common? Well, all of them have taken place in the past year and all of them take place during basketball season. More importantly, all of these dates are ones where Rajon Rondo has been suspended for some type of on court issue. Lets revisit them, shall we? The first incident took place in February last season during a game at Detroit. After not receiving a foul call following a hard drive to the basket, Rondo tossed the ball and hit the official in the chest. Rondo received a double technical, was ejected from the game and resulted in a two game suspension. The Celtics lost both games while Rondo was suspended. The second incident also involved a referee, this time taking place during the 2012 playoffs. During a quarterfinal match up against the Atlanta Hawks, Rondo was once again arguing an official’s call and bumped a referee in the final minute of the game one loss. Rondo once again received a double technical, was ejected from the game and would later be suspended for game two of the series. The Celtics won that game behind a 36 point effort from Paul Pierce. Rajon Rondo has been suspended once again for contact with an official The third incident took place earlier this season in a game against the Brooklyn Nets. Following a hard foul on Kevin Garnett, Rondo decided to take matters into his own hands and chose to get physical with Nets forward Kris Humphries. After some shoving that ended up taking both players into the stands, Rondo was ejected for fighting. This incident ended with another two game suspension for Rondo. The Celtics split both games. Yesterday, Rondo was once again suspended for an incident involving an official. During the third quarter of Saturday’s game against the Hawks, Rondo was called for an offensive charge and clearly did not agree with the call. Rondo complained to the official and he bumped him in the process. Rondo was suspended for one game because of his most recent run in with an official and the Celtics won that game last night against the New York Knicks. I have no problem with a player arguing a call made by an official and I have no problem with players being ejected because they let their emotions get in the way. All of that is a part of the game and it happens to everyone. I do have a problem when being ejected and suspended becomes a habit, especially when you are a player who is as important to a team as Rajon Rondo is. Aside from the need for a legitimate big man, the Celtics second biggest need is at the point guard position. If something happens to Rondo (like a suspension or an injury) we need someone to help run this offense. It is clear that Rondo does not realize how much his absence hurts the team. As the point guard in the offense, he is what makes this team run and when he is not on the floor things slow down big time. Rondo needs to learn to be a leader on this team because once day, this team will be his. It’s time for Rondo to mature and become a leader Many consider Rondo to be one of, if not the best, point guard in the NBA right now. But, the more he gets himself into trouble, the less people are going to think that way. Lets not forget about the water bottle throwing incident, his issues with Ray Allen and his history with Dwayne Wade. It is time for Doc and Danny to take a good hard look at Rondo and figure out what needs to be done. His maturity level has always been a concern, but now it is a major issue. Soon enough guys like Pierce and Garnett are going to leave Boston and Rondo is going to be the centerpiece on this team. If he doesn’t fix his attitude problem, who knows if he will be able to lead this team in the future. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Rondo needs to be traded or moved out of Boston. He is clearly our best player, our most important player and without him we are not a playoff caliber team. I love his hustle and I love his competitive fire but there is a line that needs to be drawn somewhere, he just hasn’t found it yet. So, my message to Rajon is simple: it’s time to grow up, whether you’re ready or not.

Rajon Rondo and home-bias assists
