The Boston Celtics have hired Erie BayHawks head coach Jay Larranaga to work as an assistant coach, sources close to the situation have confirmed. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports tweeted the news shortly before 10 p.m. today. The Erie Times-News confirmed the report with sources close to the situation. Larranaga led Erie to the D-League playoffs in his two seasons guiding the BayHawks. He couldn’t be reached by phone tonight. Former NBA head coach Mike Fratello had hired Larranaga to work as an assistant under Fratello in coaching the Ukrainian senior men’s national team in the qualifying round for the 2013 European Championships. Larranaga had been scheduled to return to Erie in September to prepare for his third season leading the BayHawks. Larranaga had a year remaining on his contract.
