Kevin Ogletree just lit up the Giants defense in week 1, and we’re encouraged by the numbers that he put up.  Remember Laurent Robinson last year? He finished the year as a solid WR2 while being a WR3 for the real-life Cowboys. Ogletree is the guy who’s taking his spot now, and while it’s early, he looks like he could be on the same path. Ogletree is being consistently targeted by Romo, and Ogletree is rewarding him.

Every year there is a player who comes out of nowhere and lights up the world. Last year, it was Victor Cruz and Jordy Nelson. Could one of them be Kevin Ogletree? He caught 8 balls for 116 yards and two touchdowns(including a 40 yarder).  His grand total for week 1?  In standard fantasy formats he put up 27.60 pts! (PPR would be 34.60 fantasy points)

You may say “receivers get 116 yards all the time”,but that wasn’t the only positive sign to come out of this game, the really positive sign was how often Romo was looking for Ogletree, especially in the red zone which enabled him to score the two touchdowns. That is the exact same way that Laurent Robinson was able to make a big fantasy impact last season.

Torn on who to drop for Ogletree?  Log into our fantasy football forums, I can help sort through your roster to find the best candidate to drop from your roster if you want a guy who could be one of this year’s biggest sleepers.

Remember, the Cowboys’ receiving core isn’t particularly durable. Bryant and Austin seem to always be dealing with an injury, and Witten had a lacerated spleen already(although he is playing through it). If one of them gets hurt, it could open the door for Ogletree to make a very real fantasy impact. Romo typically puts up pretty big stats, as he has never had less than 4,000 passing yards in a full season. There will always be somebody putting up great stats with him throwing the ball. To add on to that, he was also targeted one more time in the red zone. It was slightly underthrown by Romo, but had it been on target that would have been a third touchdown for him. The more important thing is, when they get into the red zone Romo is looking to Ogletree.  Of course, this could just be a flash in the pan. But you never know, and if he ends up breaking out you may be kicking yourself that you didn’t pick him up.

Don’t assume that this is a one time thing, there are breakout receivers every year. Pick him up as a speculative pick and it could very well be the best move of your season. Fantasy football is all about who gets there first, if you have anyone you can drop, do it. Will it probably work out? No. But there’s always a chance. Not many people expected Victor Cruz to put up WR1 stats last year.
