Coach Tomlin let out a little nugget today in his press conference.  When the Steelers play the Browns this week Tomlin was talking about his biggest match ups in the game.  One he brought up specifically was Marcus Gilbert vs. Jabaal Sheard.  While speaking of the match up Tomlin made note of Gilbert being ready for Sheard if he plans on staying the Steelers Right Tackle position because he will be facing him for years to come if he stays there.

That was a little bit of a suprise to me.  I knew Gilbert would we a starting tackle from now on for the Steelers but did not think it would be on the right side.  Max Starks is a Free Agent at the end of the season and the Steelers signed Willie Colon to a big long term deal this offseason.  That leaves a void at left tackle.  Colon can not play there.

I thought the Steelers may try to slide Gilbert over and put Colon back in at right tackle. This brings up 2 things.  Now the Steelers need to either draft a Left Tackle or resign Starks and is Willie Colon going to be cut ?

The Steelers may not have the money to pay Starks once he goes on the market.  That would mean that they need to draft a Left Tackle and that player will have to start day one.  If one person mentions Jonathan Scott I will scream.  The rookie will have to start right away, period.  There are not too many of those guys in this draft.  Where the Steelers look like they could be picking it could come down to Barrett Jones who I like better at guard and Mike Adams of Ohio State.  That is not a bad thing.

Then for Colon, he just signed a 5 year deal for $29 million.  That would be a lot of money the Steelers would have to eat in dead salary cap space.  Unless the Steelers move Colon to guard there is no where for him and his salary to stay if he is a back up.  That is too much for a guy on the bench.

Back to Gilbert though.  He has been a big surprise.  If the Steelers feel comfortable with him on the right side.  Keep him there.  If that is where he is better then that is the best place for him to be.  I am glad we found starting linemen early in the draft 2 years in a row.  I am sure Roethlisberger is as well.
