PLAYERS: E.J. Manuel
TEAMS: Buffalo Bills

Via AFC East Daily:

The Buffalo Bills aren't afforded the luxury of a dome or constant ideal weather, so they're looking for players who don't require those amenities.

They felt E.J. Manuel fit the mold.

Buffalo selected Manuel, the former Florida State Seminoles signal-caller, in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. According to Bills head coach Doug Marrone, Manuel's prospects in inclement weather helped his team make that decision.

“Going into it as far as what we were putting down that was one of the things as far as criteria for playing up here,” Marrone said Tuesday, via the team's website. “I remember when I first got the job here in Buffalo, and I had been up here and played up here before, and I got out of the car in January and the wind I was like, ‘Wow.’ I never realized how windy it was that time of the year.

“We started talking about the quarterbacks, and we went back and researched all the teams that played in the Northeast in the bad weather and all the success they had with quarterbacks and the common traits that they had. They were big and had big hands and were able to throw the ball in tough weather and that’s what we were looking at.”

According to the report, Manuel's private workout with the Bills went on in windy, stormy conditions in Tallahassee, and Manuel's impressive showing despite the circumstance helped his stock with the team.

"Well I have said this before: I think you need to be able to play in the wind and the cold," Bills general manager Buddy Nix said after the draft. "He has got huge hands. He is really strong. As far as arm strength, he might depend on that a little too much.

"He may need some refining as far as some touch and stuff. As far as arm strength there is no question. He is a huge man."

  • He couldn't handle high speed teams in college. I wonder why they think he will be able to in the NFL where everyone is bigger, better, and faster.
  • The Bill got a very good QB at a bargin basement price. Go Bills!
  • I think EJ Manuel will do just fine for our Bills,He is a big man who won't have any problems throwing to our receivers, Oh, didn't they say Doug Flutie was to short, He never got enough credit, at least from former coach Wade, Their would be no such thing as the Music City Miracle If Flutie started that game. He takes the team all season to that game and Wade says, lets try,I actually blocked his name out my mind, the tall guy, Wade must have drafted him, EJ, Show them how it's done in buffalo.
  • Coach, I agree with everything you wrote. I haven't blocked that other quarterback's name. I say it like this:

    ROB JOHNSON SUCKS!

One of the Reasons Buffalo Chose EJ Manuel Over Geno Smith

Maybe Nolan Norwacki was on to something. According to one league executive in a Jason Cole story, Smith ” doesn’t have much presence, not much of a leader.” Multiple others said that Smith spent most of his free time during team visits on his cell phone, rather than doing the things usually expected on a job interview- acting interested, asking questions, talking to folks...

Bills sign 14 rookie free agents

One of the most underrated post draft activities is the chase for undrafted free agents. Teams can find diamonds in the rough by combing though their draft boards and finding out who is left. According to Josh Alper of Profootballtalk.com, in the everlasting quest for talent, the Bills have signed 14 rookie free agents. Richmond running back Kendall Gaskins Albany fullback...

A tale of two seasons: Bills must find consistency in 2013

The Bills drafted E.J. Manuel with the 16th pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.  He has the height and athletic ability needed for a NFL quarterback.  His superior arm strength and quick release make him ideal for the weather conditions that an area like Buffalo present to a quarterback.  However, the biggest need at both quarterback and in Buffalo is consistency.  Buffalo fans have...

Linebacker Keith Pough Signed by the Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills have signed, undrafted Howard linebacker, Keith Pough. Keith was a four-year starter for Howard and ended his career with the most TFL in FCS history. He is not the fastest (4.87 40 time) guy on the field by any stretch but gives you max effort and will not give up on a play. He is most likely being brought in to compete for a reserve role and play special teams...

2013 NFL Draft: Grading The Buffalo Bills

1)  QB EJ Manuel (Florida State)Manuel has a prototypical body and he also has great speed clocking in 4.65 on his 40 yard dash.  Word has it the Bills are incorporating the spread option offense into their offensive playbooks.  Kevin Kolb and Tarvaris Jackson aren't likely to produce in the Bills new system, and I can't imagine either starting once the pre-season has...

2013 NFL Draft Team Grades: Buffalo Bills

First Round: E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State The biggest reason Buffalo is getting a good grade for this is because they were able to trade down to get another second and third round pick, which is amazing value. I'm really shocked that Buffalo took Manuel over Nassib, who had been so tightly connected to them for weeks. I think Manuel has the highest upside of any...

The Buffalo Bills aren't finished tinkering with their linebackers this offseason. Buffalo traded Kelvin Sheppard to the Indianapolis Colts for Jerry Hughes on Monday in a swap of linebackers two days after the NFL draft. Bills ship Sheppard, ink Rogers among roster moves

BY DAN BEGNOCHEThe Buffalo Bills' 222nd pick in last weekend's NFL Draft was far from their last roster move.General manager Buddy Nix and his crew have been busy the past 48 hours, snatching up more than a dozen undrafted prospects and cutting four off the roster. Jerry Hughes traded to Bills for LB Kelvin Sheppard

Don’t let the door hit ya, Jerry. Hughes was a highly touted draft pick by the Colts in the 2010 draft, but he’s been a constant disappointment in his stay in Indy. His best production was last season as he seemed to work slightly better in Pagano’s new 3-4 hybrid defensive scheme, but he still drastically under produced. Particularly so for a 1st round draft pick. Good riddance...

Parsons, the third-year forward for the Houston Rockets, has suddenly been thrust into the spotlight of Houston’s off season, as general manager Daryl Morey attempts to...

Pitino on Chris Jones: As good a guard as I've coached

Rick Pitino has coached some pretty good guards during his nearly 40-year career in college basketball.  Recently at Louisville, there was Russ Smith, the two-time All-American, and Peyton Siva, the point guard who led the Cardinals to a national championship in 2013. He had a host of talented players at Kentucky, too, the school with which he won it all in 1998.  A player currently...
