IRVING Tony Romo wasnt pleased with a third-down route Terrance Williams ran late in the first quarter Sunday night with the Dallas Cowboys on the New York Giants 14-yard line. The rookie wide receiver out of Baylor broke for the end zone instead of cutting inside on his route where Romo threw the ball. The result was an interception by Giants safety Ryan Mundy that was returned to the Cowboys 1-yard line. Romo checked to a different play before snapping the ball but Williams says he didnt see the signal. "The clock was going down and Im looking at the defense and he apparently checked to something else," Williams said Wednesday, "and I wasnt looking." Television cameras caught an angry Romo yelling in Williams direction after the play. But a few minutes later, those same cameras caught Romo trying to encourage the 24-year-old receiver while he was sitting on the bench. Romo went back to the rookie on a short route that turned into a nine-yard gain late in the first half. Williams finished his first NFL game with two catches for 32 yards after being targeted four times. "I just got to keep building trust with him and just keep doing what Im supposed to do and be at the right spots, at the right times," Williams said. "The more I do that, the more chances that hell throw the ball to me." The third-round pick has been given every opportunity to be the Cowboys No. 3 wide receiver and that will likely continue. But if he doesnt build that trust with Romo, it will be difficult to keep him on the field. "He has a chance to be a really good football player," Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. "He just needs to play. The quarterback-receiver relationship is a special one. It takes time on task and you need to work really hard in practice and in the preseason and all of that, but when youre playing a regular season game thats different. And hell learn from that experience and hopefully grow from it as well." Follow Jon Machota on Twitter: @jonmachota
