Ryan Callahan recently discussed his recovery from off-season shoulder surgery with Dan Rosen at NHL.com... "As the schedule goes, it's going to dip into training camp and it's possible it could dip into the regular season, too. The biggest thing with this is the contact. I should be able to be fully skating and shooting in training camp, but it's when you can take contact and I don't think you know that until you get further on and they evaluate it and check it out. As of now, how the rehab is going, I'm right on schedule." Callahan initially injured his shoulder in a fight with the Flyers Max Talbot on January 29th and reportedly separated said shoulder numerous times throughout the season. The Rangers Captain doesn't expect to fall behind with Alain Vigneaut's new system as he plans on being on the ice learning it while also watching video and all the games. ...i'm pretty sure we all anticipated that Callahan's recovery would force him to miss some regular season games, but I have no doubt that he will put in the extra time to make sure he is up to speed with AV's game plan once he has been cleared to play. ...while Callahan plans to be around the team while rehabbing, I have to wonder how it'll effect the team on the ice to start the season. This is where guys like Richards, Staal and even Stepan are really going to have to step up the leadership role on this team. Especially after reading that AV is a coach who allows the players to police themselves. Should be interesting. Callahan, who is entering the final season of his current contract, also mentioned that there haven't been any discussions about an extension with the Rangers. ...with all the focus being on re-signing the RFAs this summer, especially Stepan, as well as Lundqvist's extension, I completely forgot about Callahan. I have no doubt that Callahan will get a nice contract either during the season or next offseason and will be wearing the "C" for many years to come. ...i've said this numerous times on the blog, but if Callahan can lead the Rangers to the Stanley Cup, I think he should be in the conversation for greatest Blueshirts captain of all-time with Messier based on the fact that he's a home grown player.
