New York fans don’t call him King Henrik for nothing. During the shortened season, Henrik Lundqvist was first in wins, goals against average, and save percentage for goalies that played over 40 games. One year after winning the Vezina trophy, the Swede earned himself a finalist nomination this season. Needless to say, he’s been flat out spectacular as a Blue Shirt, and it is hard to imagine where the organization would be without him. He shows no signs of letting his level of play recede. As if he needs more incentive than a Stanley Cup, Lundqvist is also playing for a contract as he is in the last year of his current deal. 4) Is Ryan McDonagh worth all that money? For his stellar play in the previous three years of his rookie deal, Ryan McDonagh did not crack four million dollars in earnings, including bonuses. But after inking a six-year deal worth 28 million dollars, some fans are slightly afraid of overpaying for a defenseman, especially after the Wade Redden debacle. Those same people forget the American is only 24 years old. For a player starting the prime of his career and playing on a first defensive pairing, if McDonagh just sustains his level of play, less than five million per season is very reasonable. It’s not a steal, but the deal was fair to both sides. 3) Will Marc Staal return to his All Star form? Marc Staal just cannot catch a break. After missing significant time coming back from a concussion, issued by none other than his brother, Eric Staal, Marc took a puck to the face and missed over half the season with an eye injury. He has admitted that his eye will not get back to 100 percent, but he believes he can still play at a high level. When he did return for a single playoff game, Staal looked slightly uncomfortable, but one game is not a good sample size. It’s tough to imagine he will return to be one of the best lock-down defensemen in the league after missing so much time off, but he is only 26 and might muster up a few more solid years. 2) How will Alain Vigneault affect Brad Richards’ performance? Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, and both Sedins have smaller cap hits than Brad Richards. Meanwhile, all of them out-played Richards by a landslide. After passing on the ‘get out of jail free card,’ so to speak, and opting to not buy out his contract without suffering a cap hit — a gift from the new CBA — the Rangers need Richards to return to form and the key may lie in the coaching. John Tortorella stressed a defense first and a dump-and-chase system. Enter in Alain Vigneault, who was essentially swapped for Tortorella behind the bench and brings a much more free flowing offensive style. On a Canucks team loaded with talent, Vigneault found great success. Take out the Sedins, switch in Rick Nash, Brad Richards, and company, and the pieces are there for Richards to bounce back in a strong way this season. Expect at least 65 points from the Canadian this year. 1) Can the Rangers score enough goals to make a playoff run? The million-dollar question. Can anyone even name the last time the Rangers have cracked the top ten in goals per game? I can, the 2000-2001 season. To put it in perspective, it was the Thrasher’s (now Jets) second season AS A FRANCHISE. It’s been a while, as in over a decade. Not to say the Rangers can’t score goals, but if not for Lundqvist they may have had a few more lottery picks by now. As mentioned, Vigneault brings offense with him, but a coach can only do so much. Rick Nash has to put together better numbers in the playoffs, if the Rangers get there. Mats Zuccarello cannot be the second leading scorer on the team come post season play. They have more depth than meets the eye and it will be interesting how the new bench boss implements the speedy youngster Chris Kreider, as he saw minimal time last season. The pieces are there to break such a horrendous streak and if not now, then when? -Miller
