It comes as little surprise that Benoit Pouliot‘s agent told the New York Daily News that there is mutual interest regarding his client re-signing with the Rangers. According to Pouliot’s agent, Kent Hughes: “They’re interested in re-signing him, and he’s interested in staying in New York. With the playoffs around the corner, I don’t expect things to accelerate until the season’s over. But once it is, there will be time to figure out whether there’s a deal to be done, and there is no reason to believe we won’t get something done.” Pouliot has been a bit of a revelation for the Rangers, providing cheap secondary scoring as a free agent signing that the team has basically never had. He found a perfect match on a line with Mats Zuccarello and Derick Brassard and a coach in Alain Vigneault who believes in his abilities. It’s the first good situation Pouliot has really had in his NHL career. The timing of which, couldn’t be more perfect considering this was likely his last go in the NHL before signing in another league. Adam Banks and myself have discussed Pouliot and his free agency at length already. We both believe Pouliot re-signs. The Rangers have a bit of leverage on Pouliot, who clearly is cognizant of how good he has it in New York. Additionally, he probably still has just enough draft bust stank on him to keep other suitors at bay. Or at least, that’s the hope. A three year deal doesn’t seem out of the question, but the cap hit must be below $3M for it to be a favorable deal for the Rangers.
