The New York Rangers' 1-1 knot through two games for the third consecutive playoff series can be viewed in one of two ways.

Either the Blueshirts can be confident that they went on to win each of the first two rounds in seven games, or they can be discouraged by the notion that they simply are not learning from past mistakes.

Rangers coach John Tortorella responded with a brusque "no" when asked whether his team came with the required intensity in their 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. It was the Rangers' third consecutive Game 2 loss on home ice following a series-opening victory.

"We've been in this situation before and have come through," captain Ryan Callahan said. "We just have to go into Jersey and try to get that next game (Saturday). We can't get down."

The Rangers had weathered several onslaughts from New Jersey in taking Game 1, but the Devils' continued relentlessness on the forecheck created more problems from the start of Game 2. The Rangers actually carried a 2-1 lead until late in the second period, when Marian Gaborik's turnover led to Ryan Carter's tying goal entering the third.

"It would have been big (to go into the third period up 2-1). I just have to do a better job there on the second goal," said Gaborik, who was benched for the first 12 minutes of the final period. "We had some momentum and they took over. I have to do a better job on the wall. It's a series. We just have to come back into their building and play better."

The Devils were able to generate consistent traffic in front of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, a trend worth monitoring going forward in this series. Ilya Kovalchuk scored a power-play goal from in close, and the other two New Jersey goals were deflections from just outside the crease.

"In the first period, they were the better team," Lundqvist said. "The second period we came back and made a little push, but overall we just have to be better. They wanted it a little more."
