Your first career NHL goal. It' a moment that can never be forgotten by player. Last night in the Oilers season opener against the Penguins, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins did this in dramatic fashion in his first game. With less than five minutes left in the third and down by one, Nugent-Hopkins tied the game and sent it to overtime. The Oilers eventually won the contest in the shoot-out thanks to a goal by Ales Hemsky.
"Going into the game I was really nervous, but I tried to use that to my advantage," said Nugent-Hopkins, who played his first NHL regular-season game. "It felt pretty good... it was really exciting. But, I'm more excited about the win."
The Oilers sure do have something special when it comes to rookies making their debut. Last season in his first NHL game, once again the season opener for Edmonton, Jordan Eberle scored an insane goal that helped the Oilers beat the Flames 4-0. The goal ended up being the goal of the year in many people's minds.
Nugent-Hopkins couldn't have asked for a better start to his promising career. His goal may not be as amazing as Eberle's last year, but it was more crucial in helping the Oilers get two points out of the game. What a start for the 1st overall pick!
My Projection: 57 points (if he spends the whole season with the big club)
