Landon Donovan silenced 21,000 Vancouver Whitecaps fans on Saturday night. He also could have blinded one or two of them.
The L.A. Galaxy star’s laser-beam strike gave his team an early lead in Vancouver. The two-time defending MLS Cup champion held for a 1-0 victory and moved into second place in the MLS Western Conference.
In the third minute, Donovan ran onto a pass from Robbie Keane, took a touch then lashed a left-footed shot past Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted from around 25 yards out.
The goal was the redh-hot Donovan’s fourth in his last three games. It was also his 131st career goal in MLS. He needs just four more to pass Jeff Cunningham and become MLS’ all-time leading goal scorer.
