PLAYERS: Mario Balotelli
Maybe Mario Balotelli's absence will have a positive effect on Italy. Coach Cesare Prandelli is hoping that without his strongest player, the Azzurri will gel together as a more solid unit in the Confederations Cup semifinal vs. Spain on Thursday. Prandelli says, ''We lose something in terms of quality but maybe it can improve the quality of our play.'' Prandelli announced that Alberto Gilardino will take Balotelli's spot at center forward. Gilardino shot to prominence under Prandelli at Parma a decade ago and also played for the manager at Fiorentina. Prandelli says, ''He's a reliable player, a generous player, a reference point for the squad and a player who knows how to score goals. ... His numbers prove that.''

Enrico Castellacci, the head of Italy's medical staff, said on figc.it: "I...

Spain and Italy 0-0 at halftime in semifinal

World Cup holder Spain and Italy were drawing 0-0 at halftime in their Confederations Cup semifinal on Thursday, but it was Italy creating more of the chances even without the injured Mario Balotelli. While Spain relied on its usual high-speed game of short passes and ball possession, Italy threatened several times with swift counterattacks, often out-running Spain's defenders...

Spain must cope with mounting distractions

Spain will have to beat Italy in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup, and deal with a few distractions, too. The World Cup winners answered almost as many questions Tuesday about a robbery in their team hotel last week - and denied it was linked to late-night partying - as they did about the tropical heat in northeastern Brazil and Italy's desire for revenge. The Italians...
