The Argentina international who pledged to stay with the club after initially deciding to leave in January, suffered the back problem during the Magpies’ 4-2 victory against Southampton last weekend.
During the match, Coloccini tried to clear a ball acrobatically during the first half where he injured himself and limped off the ground before the half time. Manager Alan Pardew hoped that his skipper would be ready for action against Swansea, but as it stands, he is set to miss at least five games.
