Minnesota cheerleaders root for their "Gophers." Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota and Wisconsin have long engaged in a bitter sports rivalry, and Minneapolis-based Target Corp. has been forced to issue a mea culpa when apparel was found in area stores that erroneously mixed up the team names of the state’s Big Ten schools.

Eagle-eyed shoppers at Minnesota Target stores unsurprisingly took notice recently when onesies that read “Minnesota Badgers” started showing up on shelves.

The problem, of course, is the University of Minnesota’s sports teams are known as the Golden Gophers, whereas Badgers name obviously is used by the University of Wisconsin.

Such an affront to the sensibilities of Gophers fans amid the rival schools’ longstanding “Border Battle” could not go without Target making an apology for such an unforgivable transgression.

“Color us red,” Target said in a statement that leaned on the shade that the retail giant shares with the Badgers and is known to reveal embarrassment, per the Star Tribune. “As a Minnesota-based company, we know we are home to the Gophers. We’ve worked with our vendor to remove this item and apologize to any sports fans who might have been left scratching their head.”

In the grand scheme of things, such a gaffe is hardly a major scandal, but it is nevertheless an amusing one. It’s a shame that enterprising Gophers fans were deprived the opportunity to snatch up some of these onesies before they disappeared off the shelves.

What better prank gift could there have been for a Gophers fan who bleeds maroon and gold?
