Lucy M, portrayed by Dakota Johnson, is the eternal bachelorette finally ready for more in Materialists. The question is, will she go for her ideal match in Pedro Pascal or her imperfect past love in Chris Evans?
A24 just shared the trailer for Celine Song's highly anticipated rom-com, featuring a new original song by Japanese Breakfast. Producer Christine Vachon offered a little tease to GQ of what fans can expect from the film, saying, "It feels like she [Song] makes a different movie every time, that she’s going to be the kind of a filmmaker who doesn’t make the same movie twice."
While speaking with Pedro Almodóvar for Interview Magazine, the writer-director expressed, "I think of my actors like they’re my spouse. You chose them, and you love them, and you know them so intimately that there are so many things that are their strengths that made you love them, but also there’s so many flaws that drive you crazy. And then you have to constantly decide if you’re going to accept them, try to correct them on set, or try to correct them in post-production. But I usually find that, just as you eventually have to accept your partner’s whole being, there are moments where I accept everything about my actors."
A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.
Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah interviewed Song for their podcast, Visitations, and she opened up about her creative process. "Writing something or making something is what I would call an erotic act because you’re trying to reach something that you can’t quite," Song explained. "I’ve never been able to finish something that I thought I was smarter than. I always have to believe that the thing that I’m writing is much smarter than me and that it’s hard to reach."
Materialists will be released in theaters on June 13.
