Angels Coach and Potential Managerial Candidate Being Interviewed by San Diego for Same Role
USA TODAY Sports

As the offseason starts rolling, the Los Angeles Angels are searching for a new manager. It will be the fifth manager since 2018 for the team, and they are casting a wide net in the search.

They have some in-house options that they are considering, but one of them could be gone before the Halos make a decision.

Angels infield coach Benji Gil has gotten a ton of buzz lately regarding some of the open managerial positions across baseball, and it seems that he is also now being included in the San Diego Padres search.

Gil had been a candidate for the Angels open job as well, and he very well still could be. The Halos have been keeping their manager search very close to the vest, and nobody knows what is going on.

But Gil being mentioned within the Padres search is interesting and shows that he is valued around baseball. He brings experience to the table, and he managed Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.

This could just be the Padres doing their due diligence, especially considering that all reporting has been that they prefer to hire from within the organization. But it can’t hurt to interview Gil to at least see what he has to say.

Gil could bring a new voice to the Padres clubhouse, and he is young enough to be able to bond with the players. It could be a good hire if San Diego doesn't mind hiring a first-time manager in the MLB.

It seems that the Angels could lose their coach, one way or another this winter. He could fit either team, and the hope is that he gets his shot this offseason. This will be a situation to monitor closely as we watch for both the Padres and Halos managerial hires.
