Mets surging behind Pete Alonso’s ‘LFGM’ rallying cry
Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

Don’t look now but the New York Mets, after being left on the season scrap heap after an underwhelming start to the 2019 campaign, suddenly find themselves in the midst of the chase for a postseason spot thanks to a recent red-hot stretch.

What’s more, it sounds like the Mets have found inspiration to keep the run rolling in Pete Alonso’s bold talk at the trade deadline.

Just as all the action closed at the deadline — one in which the Mets surprisingly added Marcus Stroman and held on to Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler — Alonso proclaimed on Twitter that as far as the team was concerned, “Our goal is to make history.”

As part of the tweet directed at Mets fans, Alonso added “LFGM” in closing.

Following Monday’s doubleheader sweep of the Miami Marlins, Alonso was asked about his now-famous tweet by SNY’s Steve Gelbs. His response? “LFGM,” which elicited cheers out of the Mets faithful still at Citi Field.

Alonso was asked what the “F” in “LFGM” stands for, as the remaining three letters are obviously for “Let’s Go Mets.”

“It’s kind of up for interpretation, but all true Mets fans know what the ‘F’ stands for,” Alonso said.

Fair enough.

The Mets are 17-6 since the July 31 trade deadline. Rising above the .500 mark for the first time in quite a while with a 57-56 record, the Mets sit 8.5 games back of the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves. While it may be tough to get back in the division race, nothing is impossible.

More importantly, though, is that the Mets only sit 2.5 games back in the NL Wild Card race. The team will attempt to add on to its four-game winning streak when they again meet up with the Marlins on Tuesday night.
