Few pitchers have performed better this season than Jacob deGrom. Even fewer pitchers who have done so well also have so little to show for it.
The lack of run and/or bullpen support by the New York Mets when deGrom pitches has been an issue all season . That continued on Monday when deGrom was charged with the loss in the Mets’ 3-2 defeat to the San Diego Padres. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over eight innings, striking out 10.
DeGrom is now 5-5 this season despite carrying a sparkling 1.71 ERA. Mets reporter Anthony DiComo noted that deGrom is now on pace to become the first pitcher in the modern era to throw 200-plus innings with a sub-2.00 ERA and win fewer than 10 games.

A pitcher allowing so few runs and still winning so few games seems unfathomable.
Since a start on May 18 that he won, deGrom has gone just 1-4 despite having just a 1.69 ERA. The Mets even managed to go 0-3 during a three-game stretch in which deGrom allowed just two runs over 21 innings.
DeGrom deserves so much more, which is why some are hoping he gets traded.
