MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Bucks made sure one of their most beloved players will stay in town. Bobby Portis Jr. agreed to a new three-year, $44 million contract, declining his $13.4 million player option for next season. Portis’ new deal keeps him with the Bucks through 2028, with a player option for the final season.  Portis made it clear this summer that he wanted a long-term contract — and the Bucks delivered. With Bobby Portis Jr’s extension sorted out, the Bucks complete one of their biggest goals this offseason.

For five seasons, Portis has brought energy, grit, and scoring punch to the Bucks’ second unit. Over the past four years, he’s posted steady Player Efficiency Ratings: 17.5, 17.7, 17.4, and 17.4. His impact goes beyond numbers.

Bobby Portis Jr’s extension news comes as no surprise to the Bucks fans who adore his toughness. Nicknamed the ‘Mayor of Milwaukee’, Portis has been a key piece of the 2021 championship squad. He finished in the top three for Sixth Man of the Year in 2023 and 2024.

Portis has scored 2,181 points off the bench over the past three seasons, ranking behind only Malik Monk and Naz Reid.

Bobby’s Offensive Versatility

The 6-foot-10 forward spaces the floor for Giannis Antetokounmpo, forcing defenses to respect his range. Last season, Portis shot 46.6% from the field and 36.5% from deep — slightly down from past years but enough to stretch defenses.

His averages of 13.9 points and 8.4 rebounds in just over 25 minutes show his efficiency. He returned from a 25-game suspension late last season, helping Milwaukee in the playoffs against Indiana. In that series, Portis averaged 14 points and 8.2 rebounds, including a 28-point performance in Game 2 — two shy of his playoff career high.

Team-Friendly Deal Benefits Bucks

Bobby Portis Jr’s extension with the Bucks carries an average annual value of $14.7 million. This figure slightly exceeds the league’s mid-level exception, which is about what he might have commanded in unrestricted free agency.

Portis probably realized a bigger raise wasn’t out there, but the Bucks got their guy back. His new deal is cap-friendly and keeps Milwaukee flexible for future moves.

Focus Shifts to Remaining Free Agents

The Bucks still have work to do. They must decide on Brook Lopez, Gary Trent Jr., Kevin Porter Jr., Ryan Rollins, Jericho Sims, and Taurean Prince. Some insiders believe Portis’ deal could hint at Lopez’s departure, but that remains unclear.

Milwaukee now has six players with guaranteed contracts: Giannis, Damian Lillard, Kyle Kuzma, Portis, Pat Connaughton, and rookie Tyler Smith.

A Symbol of Milwaukee’s Identity

Portis joined the Bucks after stints with the Bulls and Wizards. He found a true home in Milwaukee, where his hustle and charisma turned him into a city icon.

Bobby Portis Jr’s extension shows the Bucks front office values not just talent but also players who embody the franchise’s spirit.

Bucks Secure Important Bobby Portis Jr Extension

Securing Bobby Portis signals the Bucks’ commitment to continuity while staying competitive. Portis made his wishes clear — and Milwaukee listened.

This extension keeps one of the NBA’s most beloved role players where he belongs — in Milwaukee, wearing green and white, with the city behind him every step of the way.
