Jacoby Brissett could be collateral damage. Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

The Indianapolis Colts signed quarterback Jacoby Brissett to a contract extension last year, but could he be a surprising cut this spring?

According to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com, that’s a scenario we shouldn’t rule out.

He notes that the Colts, who have been heavily linked to free agent Philip Rivers, could end up biting the bullet on Brissett’s contract to save some money against the cap if they go all in on Rivers.

“Changing course would be a costly move for Ballard. Brissett has a guaranteed $7 million bonus due, and releasing him would cost $12.5 million in dead money, although the Colts have enough space to cut their losses if they go Full Rivers.”

The Colts, of course, had Brissett starting last year because franchise quarterback Andrew Luck stunned everyone by retiring during the preseason. Publicly, the team expressed full confidence in Brissett, and of course he got the contract extension.

But the veteran backup did not play particularly well after the first few games and struggled to stay healthy. In the end, Brissett put up very mediocre numbers, completing 60.9% of his passes for 2,942 yards (averaging 6.6 yards per attempt) with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions in 15 games.
