Taylor Heinick signed a two-year contract extension with the Washington Football Team. The quarterback’s deal has a maximum value of $8.75 million with incentives. However, the details of the contract have been revealed by Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.

Heinicke receives $500,000 in guaranteed money. He’ll receive $1 million in base salary in 2021 and $1.5 million in 2022. From there he has game-day roster bonuses that equal up to $500,000 in 2021. He earns up to $750,000 in Year 2 in roster bonuses. There are additional incentives included based on regular season wins, reaching the playoffs and team playoff wins.

The contract is a smart deal by the Washington Football Team for a backup quarterback, who has a great deal of potential but a lot more to prove. Heinicke certainly gets a income boost, considering he was out of the league until December 2020. And he can play his way into a lot more.

Taylor Heinicke was initially signed as the quarantine quarterback as precaution against the coronavirus pandemic. However, Alex Smith’s bone bruise and Dwayne Haskins’ poor play thrust Heinicke in position to get on the field.

Heinicke ultimately started in Washington’s Wild Card playoff loss to Tampa Bay. While the game ended in a loss, Heinicke stole the spotlight with him impressive effort. He threw for 306 yards and a touchdown. He also added an epic diving touchdown. That courageous effort has earned him another opportunity in the NFL.
