Rams Ex Coach Jeff Fisher Leaves USFL Job

Jeff Fisher failed to find his Hollywood ending in the rebooted United States Football League.

The former Los Angeles Rams head coach stepped down from the same spot with the USFL's Michigan Panthers, who will return for their second back on the field this spring. Fisher is succeeded by former San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, whose most recent professional football affairs came as the Dallas Cowboys' defensive coordinator in 2020.

Michigan confirmed Fisher's departure and Nolan's hire on Friday.

Best known for his lengthy tenure as the head coach of the Houston/Tennessee Oilers/Titans (1995-2010), Fisher was the Rams' first coach upon their return to Los Angeles in 2016. It was his fifth year with the organization, having previously overseen its final four seasons in St. Louis. Fisher failed to make it through that premiere season, going 4-9 to cap off a 31-45-1 at the helm.

The Panthers' job was Fisher's first in a coaching capacity since his time with the Rams ended. Michigan, however, failed to make any headway in the new USFL, going 2-8 in his first and only season with the top headset. Fisher also served as the Panthers' general manager, assembling a roster that included former NFL first-round pick Paxton Lynch at quarterback.

Michigan will return to action this spring with Nolan in town. The Panthers (whose current roster features former Rams starter Ethan Westbrooks) will play their home games at Ford Field in Detroit, sharing it as a hub alongside the Philadelphia Stars.
