Sunderland have completed their second signing in 24 hours with the signing of 22-year-old winger Nilson Angulo from Belgian side Anderlecht. The Ecuador international replaces the outgoing Simon Adingra, who has agreed to join Monaco on loan with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer.
The deal was confirmed by Sunderland’s official website, safc.com.
The 12-time capped Ecuador international winger has played 97 times for Anderlecht since moving to Belgium on a five-year deal in 2022. Angulo has gone on to register 10 goals and 11 assists, with the majority of these coming in his 22 appearances this season.
Scout Antonio Mango said the following via his Twitter page. “Angulo is athletic, dynamic, and a dribbling expert. Capable of going inside and out of opponents, using trickery and bursts of speed to breeze past opponents. He’ll also look forward face when receiving and drive towards opponents.”
Angulo is expected to be part of Ecuador’s World Cup squad this summer and scored his first goal for his country against New Zealand in November. He has also helped Anderlecht to second in the Belgian top tier and the semi-final of the Belgian Cup.
The signing of Nilson Angulo follows the arrival of 22-year-old goalkeeper Melker Ellborg from Malmö FF. His arrival allowed Anthony Patterson to join Millwall on loan for the rest of the season. Also leaving Wearside this transfer window is Dan Neil, who has joined Ipswich Town on loan. The former Black Cats captain has found his playing time limited this season, and with his contract expiring in the summer, it was believed to be best for all concerned to let the midfielder move on.
Elsewhere, Patrick Roberts has completed a permanent move to Birmingham City, Aji Alese has joined Portsmouth on loan, and Leo Hjelde has moved to Sheffield United until the end of the season.
