Arsenal extended their lead to five points at the top of the Premier League, courtesy of a dramatic 2-1 victory at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Gunners needed a last-gasp Yerson Mosquera own goal to claim all three points. After the dramatic win, Mikel Arteta spoke to the press about the late win and the injury sustained by Ben White.
It turned out to be anything other than straightforward for the Gunners against bottom-of-the-table Wolves. Arsenal were aided by the return of some key players, including William Saliba and Declan Rice.
Bukayo Saka delivered a deep corner which swung in and hit the post, before deflecting off Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and going in, seemingly gifting Arsenal the three points. Wolves suddenly began to apply some pressure when Tolu Arokodare flicked the ball past a stranded David Raya.
Arsenal were not done, and in the 94th minute, a Saka cross intended for Gabriel Jesus was headed into his own net by Yerson Mosquera, much to the delight and relief of all connected to Arsenal.
Reflecting on the last-gasp win, Arteta said: “It was a relief, but a very clear understanding that the margin should have been bigger.
“After we had a period of two to three minutes with horrible defensive habits against a team that had no shots and score from one.”
“Exactly that. He has not play any minutes.
“We had to risk Willy; we’re buying tickets for another injury, but we don’t have any choice. It looks like a hamstring, and in the next days we will know more.”
It was a frustrating game for the fans inside the stadium, who saw many attacks break down, with a poor final pass. However, the Emirates was bouncing at full-time. Arteta was asked about the flatness before the dramatic ending:
“Everyone at full time was jumping, thats understandable but hopefully we can do that from the first minute.”
