Garbine Muguruza set to finish the year out of Top 50 for first time since 2013 despite being no. 13
Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

Garbine Muguruza is currently world no. 13 in the WTA Rankings but she's set to finish the season outside of Top 50 forI the first time since 2013.

In 2014, the Spanish player won her first WTA title and continued her growth also in the following seasons. Every year from 2015 until 2017, Garbine Muguruza finished in Top 10 of the WTA Rankings and lifted at least one trophy.

Despite finishing 18th, 36th and 15th from 2018 until 2020, last year, she had a superb end of the year and by winning tournaments in Chicago and also WTA Finals in Guadalajara, she managed to climb to the third spot and finish the year in Top 10 of the first time since 2017.

Yet this year was much less successful for former world no. 1, who lost 17 out of 29 matches she played. Moreover, she won't be able to defend her points at the WTA Finals and since she's currently ranked 49th in the WTA Race and withdrew from the 2022 Guadalajara Open, Garbine Muguruza will most likely finish the year out of Top 50 for the first time since 2013, when she finished as world number 63.

When speaking about her season earlier this year, she said: “It’s been a tough season, a little bit of a roller coaster,” Garbine Muguruza admitted. “I don’t know if I’m going to be able, with these last tournaments, to have a different feeling. That’s my goal. I think that it’s all about confidence and how well you’re playing or how many matches you’ve been playing."

“Definitely this year I feel that I haven’t played that many matches so obviously when the important moments come, you really feel that confidence that is not quite there yet. I think also trying and trying and trying, at some point I will get rewarded,” said hopeful Garbine Muguruza.
