Chicago Sky star Angel Reese seems to have turned the tide when it comes to her performances on the court. She has helped her team win 3 of their previous 6 games, and fought hard but lost the other 3 by less than 5 points per game.
It was a major improvement over their early season performances. The Sky lost 10 of their first 13 games, and most of it was down to the lack of chemistry. The retooled squad could not play to their strengths, and were struggling to make sense of their season.
Reese was also blamed after registering a few embarrassing single-digit performances. In the first of those, fans noticed how she continued to miss layups underneath the rim, even though she was grabbing her own rebounds.
Fans thought this was a result of the 2nd year pro’s lack of development over the offseason. The problem is, that it has become a recurring theme, and comedian Katt Williams, while on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, used that to talk about his basketball skills.
In basketball, I’m 5′ 5″. So there’s a whole realm of basketball I can’t experience. I don’t have any above the rim experience. On the other hand, I’m not Angel Reese. I’m 99% on my layups, because I can’t afford to miss a layup. My layup is my dunk.

Show host Carmelo Anthony knew right there what his troll was about. He did crack a smile, but knew it was just a joke and would not affect his family’s relationship with the Chicago Sky superstar. He probably also knows how Reese is trying to change that narrative.
Last season, Angel Reese pointed out that she was just a rookie, and will develop with time. This season, her new head coach, Tyler Marsh, has assigned her a different role than last season. He believes with the forward playing in the post alongside center Kamilla Cardoso, it was clogging the area.
Either one or the other would play to their strengths. That would not be beneficial for a team that is looking to maximize all five players on the court. Along with the Brazilian, the Chicago Sky re-signed forward/center Elizabeth Williams and drafted forward Maddy Westbeld.
Four similarly skilled players would make it difficult for either to operate inside the paint. Marsh has used the opportunity to ask Angel Reese to play the point forward role. After struggling initially to adapt to the role, the 23-year-old has started to get a grip on it.
This role helped her record her 1st ever WNBA triple-double. Her assists are also double of what she registered last season. This new role, has helped the Sky improve their spacing and flow. After keeping Westbeld on the bench for much of the season, Marsh has brought her in on a similar role whenever Reese sits. This new tactic is helping the Maryland native change the surrounding perception.
Even if Katt Williams still jokes about it, those on social media who used to belittle Reese’s layup misses are now quiet. Her Player of the Week award and 2nd All-Star call-up are also helping to change that narrative.
In one of the three losses in these past 6 games, the Chicago Sky were neck-and-neck with last year’s WNBA Finalists, the Minnesota Lynx. After that game, Angel Reese lashed out at officials claiming their foul calls were not fair.
Now she has a chance to see if the league has taken a note of that complaint. The Sky will next play the Lynx at their home two straight times. That gives them two chances to know how far Reese and her teammates have come.
Even if they lose those games, close battles will give them an indication that they are building towards something better. Hopefully, the team will start reaping the benefits after the All-Star game.
